But when I woke up again, I was in the guest room of Merritt’s apartment.

There was a faint medicinal taste in my mouth. Matteo had actually used his prized miracle drug on me.

He had already treated my wound. When he saw me wake up, he gave a cold snort.

“The Vitale heart is positioned slightly differently than most. If Merritt hadn’t pulled back, no one could have saved you. Since you didn’t know where Seraphina was, why didn’t you just say so? Why make everyone worry?”

The others echoed his sentiment. Every one of them blamed

Seraphina hid behind Merritt, her face a mask of innocence.

“I just wanted to bake a pumpkin pie to surprise everyone. I didn’t expect my sister to stay silent and let it all become my

fault.”

I let out a cold laugh.

“What was I supposed to say? That the video was a fake?

That I didn’t drive Seraphina away? That she set me up from

the very beginning? I’ve said all of that, countless times, for

the past four years. Did any of you ever believe me?”

They all froze.

Seraphina’s body swayed, but she quickly steadied herself

and shook her head.

“I didn’t. It wasn’t me.”

Merritt immediately pulled her into his arms, dabbing at the

tears at the corners of her eyes.

“Seraphina, don’t cry. We all know what kind of person you

are.”

Matteo also stood by her side, trying to soothe her.

“Don’t be upset. I’ll take you to see the lights in Times Square

later. You’ll outshine every celebrity there tonight.”

Surrounded by their affection, Seraphina finally smiled.

When she looked back at me, her eyes were gleaming with triumph.

I laughed.

“See? It doesn’t matter what I say. Nothing I do can compete

with two tears from her. Since that’s how it is, what else is

there to say?”
