The penthouse exploded into chaos. Everyone swarmed around me.

I felt someone pressing an expensive suit jacket to my wound, trying to stop the bleeding.

“Helena, don’t you dare close your eyes!”

Through a hazy blur, I thought I saw a familiar figure. He wore the dress uniform of an Army Special Forces major, his face etched with exhaustion from a long journey, and he was calling my name, over and over.

“Brennan.”

The moment the name left my lips, the memories of our youth came flooding back.

The Kelleher family had been friends with ours for years.

When Matteo and I first moved to New York, we lived next

door to them.

Back then, Brennan was an uncontrollable boy, afraid of

nothing. The first time we met, he snatched the ribbon from

my hair.

My hair tumbled down around my shoulders. He glanced at

me, then blushed and stammered, unable to form a word.

I found it amusing and stuffed a lollipop into his mouth.

“Young man, has no one ever taught you? If you take a girl’s things without asking, you have to take responsibility.”

Brennan was silent for a long moment.

I thought I had teased him into speechlessness. Then, very softly, he answered.

“I’ll take responsibility.”

After that, our families grew close. Brennan and I grew up together, and our engagement felt like a natural conclusion.

He was also one of my mission targets. Marrying him would

have meant success.

But the moment Seraphina appeared, Brennan gave her all

his attention.

“Seraphina’s more fragile than you. I only see her as a sister.”

“Why do you have to make everything so ugly? Seraphina would never act like you.”

“Helena, how do you explain this? I’ve never seen someone so jealous of their own sister.”

The day Brennan broke off our engagement, I didn’t make a scene. I just agreed.

Later, I became engaged to Merritt. Seraphina let Brennan

go, then wedged herself between Merritt and me.

After that, Seraphina disappeared, and Brennan was deployed overseas. He was gone for years.

In my heart, that boy ceased to exist.

Tonight felt almost staged. Every man I had once tried to

win over was here. Even the one who had abandoned me all

those years ago had returned.

But I had no more time to waste on them.

I just wanted to go home.
