They Loved Their White Moonlight, Till I Disappeared Forever Chapter 05

Merritt Rhodes met me in his penthouse. He didn’t waste a single word, just strode over and seized my chin.

“Where is Seraphina?”

I looked up at my former fiancé, and a wave of regret washed over me.

When I first met Merritt at the bottom of a ravine years ago, he’d just been in a skiing accident. I dug him out of the snow, got him to a cabin, and led away the reporters who were hoping to get a picture of him at his worst.

Back then, Seraphina had just stolen my fiancé, an army officer I’d grown up with. I was the laughingstock of the city.

When Merritt found out, he proposed an engagement, offering me the title of future Mrs. Rhodes.

He said it wasn’t just to repay me.

But the moment Seraphina reappeared, Merritt’s attention was always on her.

They watched the moon on Long Island, vacationed in the Hamptons, and spoke in a world of their own, one where I had never belonged.

When Seraphina disappeared, Merritt, who had always been gentle with me, raised his hand to me for the first time. He shoved me to the floor. My head hit the corner of a table, and blood was everywhere.

That was also when I learned I had been pregnant.

The child was gone, just like that.

As I remained silent, Merritt’s eyes grew colder.

“It seems you won’t talk until you’re taught a lesson.”

Merritt had bodyguards bring in restraints, preparing to interrogate me. Zane personally supervised. Matteo gave me an injection that would keep me conscious while amplifying every sensation of pain.

A sliver of fear finally cut through me.

I wanted to die. But not like this.

As I struggled, the first basin of ice water crashed over me.

The cold was a physical blow, drilling into my bones. My lips trembled, but I couldn’t even scream.

“Kill me…”

Merritt’s lip curled.

“You think that will make me go soft? I’ll ask you again. Where is Seraphina?”

I lifted my bloodless face and smiled at him.

“Seraphina? I killed her. Don’t you love her more than anyone? Go on, then. Kill me. Avenge her.”

Merritt’s eyes flared red. He snatched an antique letter opener from his desk and drove it into my chest.

Just before I lost consciousness, I heard Seraphina’s voice from the doorway.

“Is everyone here? We can all spend the holiday together! Why is there so much blood…?”

Merritt’s knife was sharp. Even though he’d pulled back at the last second, the blade still sank deep into my flesh.

Thanks to Matteo’s injection, the pain was more vivid, more absolute than anything I’d ever felt.

Blood seeped from the wound. My strength drained away, and I collapsed in a spreading pool of my own blood.

It was all right. I just had to hold on a little longer.

Then I could go home.
