Matteo dropped the gift box. He rushed over, slapping my back and prying at my mouth, forcing his fingers inside to dig out the leaf.

“Spit it out! Are you trying to kill yourself?”

I fought him with everything I had. Numbness was already creeping into my limbs, but I clenched my teeth, refusing to open my mouth, biting his fingers until they bled.

Matteo sucked in a sharp breath and slapped me hard across the face.

“Just because Merritt doesn’t want you, you pull a stunt like this? Have you no dignity left? Seraphina and Merritt are the ones who belong together. It’s been four years. Haven’t you figured that out yet?”

Ignoring his bleeding hand, he ordered someone to bring an emetic and forced it down my throat.

I vomited until my stomach was empty. Collapsed on the floor, I couldn’t stop myself from laughing.

“Is that what you call dignity? Deciding I hurt Seraphina without a shred of proof, then throwing your own sister out of the house?”

Matteo’s face went white. For a moment, he was speechless.

Suddenly, the screech of tires sounded from outside.

An assistant in a suit rushed in, flustered, and bowed his head to Zane.

“Mr. Santoro, Mr. Rhodes needs you to bring Miss Helena over immediately. Miss Seraphina… she’s missing.”

Zane and Matteo exchanged a look, then both turned to stare at me on the floor.

“No wonder you kept trying to kill yourself. You were creating a distraction.”

“Where did you hide Seraphina? What are you planning to do to her this time?”

How would I know where Seraphina had decided to hide herself?

But this did seem like an opportunity.

They cared about her so much. Maybe, in their panic, they would finally kill me.

I said nothing. So they dragged my pathetic, disheveled self back to Manhattan.
