could to book Susan for me, and you casually handed her services over to someone else.”

“This was supposed to be our relationship, but Lila was everywhere in it. You constantly expected me to give way to her. All I asked was that you not make me do it at our wedding, and even that was too much for you.”

“The wedding is ruined. Nothing you say can change that. I don’t want to give way to anyone anymore.

Nolan felt as though his heart were being twisted apart.

“You won’t have to, Ruby. I’ll never ask you to give way again. I was wrong. I let other people poison my thinking. You’re the person I want to spend my life with, and I’ll never let anyone hurt you again.”

“Please give me one more chance. I’ll propose again, and we’ll plan another wedding. Tell me which makeup artist you want, and I’ll book her. I promise she’ll be there for you and no one else. Please.”

Those were the exact words I had once longed to hear.
