I didn’t know if Corbin had tried to find me.

New phone. New number. Whether he came looking or not—it didn’t matter anymore.

I stayed in Hollow Grove for another week.

Grandma’s surgery went well, and I stuck around a couple more days to look after her.

Then Lachlan and I finally left.

Grandma sat in her wheelchair, smiling as she told me to live my own life.

Truth was, I didn’t figure Lachlan’s interest in me would last all that long.

Maybe in a couple months, I’d be back. Fix up the old house. Stay here with Grandma.

At the airport, our flight took off. It was my first time on a plane.

We climbed through a blanket of white clouds into a sky so blue it almost didn’t look real.

I couldn’t stop looking out the window.

“What’s so fascinating?” Lachlan said, but he didn’t make me pull the shade down.

Instead, he asked, “Want to try the airplane meal? It tastes awful too.”

I turned to him with a smile.

“Lachlan, thank you.”

He froze. Then, right in front of me, the tips of his ears turned red.

“Are you blushing?”

“Oh, shut up.” He cut me off in a gruff voice and tossed a blanket over my head.

“Go to sleep. You were up half the night. How do you still have this much energy?”

“I told you. I used to work factory jobs. They take stamina.”

Wrapped in the blanket, I looked at him and smiled.

“I mean it, Lachlan. Thank you.”

“Even if we lose touch someday, I’ll pray for you. Wish you well. For the rest of my life.”

He snorted. “Aren’t you scared I’m gonna drag you off and harvest your organs?”

“No.” I shook my head. “Not at all.”

I’d never been to Portshire before.

But with Lachlan by my side, I wasn’t afraid. Not one bit.

I wanted to see a bigger world with him.

And someday, I hoped I’d be able to stand on my own.
