His Wine Cost More Than My Unborn Child Chapter 12

His Wine Cost More Than My Unborn Child Chapter 12

I took Lachlan to see the house where I’d grown up.

It was an old mud-brick house.

No one had lived there for years, and half of it had already caved in.

“So where are you staying now?” he asked.

“At my uncle’s.” I smiled awkwardly.

“But only for a few days. I’ll pay them for my stay.”

“They don’t treat you very well, do they?”

He frowned. “From what I’ve seen, they’re like leeches.”

“With the cost of living around here, there’s no way your grandma spends three thousand dollars a

month.”

“I get where they’re coming from, actually.”

“Uncle Boyd has two sons. One just got married, new baby. The other’s still in school.”

“Neither of them has a steady job-they just pick up odd jobs here and there.”

“Plus they’re taking care of Grandma. That’s a lot of pressure.”

I paused. “I mean, they’ve never exactly been good to me. But when I was little, they did buy me new

clothes a few times.”

“That’s just how life is when you’re poor. Everyone’s trying to get a little more for themselves.”

“But that doesn’t always mean they’re bad people.”

Lachlan didn’t say anything.

| I rubbed the back of my neck.

“You think I’m a pushover, don’t

“A little?” He nod. !!?

Try to fix that. Otherwise you’re never gonna hold on to your money.”

“I do have my limits.” I smiled. “I even thought about saving up enough to rebuild this house one

day.”

“Don’t let the way I look fool you–I’m a landowner.”

“If I ever can’t make it in the city, I can always come back and farm. I won’t starve.”

“But right now, I’ve got Grandma to take care of. So I need to hustle.”

“Oh. So that’s why you asked me for another five thousand last night?”

“I didn’t-” My face burned.

“It’s my bank. I hit my transfer limit. I told you, as soon as I go to the bank and get the limit raised, I’ll—”

“Oh, please. If I actually took that five grand back, you’d be home cursing me out as some kind of

miser.”

“I never thought that!”

He laughed. “And if you’re going to ask me for money, at least dream a little bigger.”

Last night I would’ve said yes to just about anything.”

“And what did you ask for? Five thousand.”

I kept my mouth shut. After all, I was an honest, well-behaved woman.

Not like him-running his mouth, saying whatever he pleased, no filter whatsoever.
