Rebirth: My Sister Stole My Rapist Husband Chapter 02 The Last Bit of Warmth
Lila’s eyes were bloodshot with rage. She pointed at the villagers and snarled, “When Luke gets rich, you’ll all come crawling to me, begging—and I won’t give you a cent!” The villagers only laughed louder. “He’s nothing but a thieving, orphaned bastard and a rapist. He’ll never amount to anything.” Lila stamped her foot and stormed back inside. Diana took all her fury out on me, twisting my arm until I felt something tear. “They’re insulting your sister! Shaming this family! Why didn’t you shut them up? Why didn’t you fight back?” She went inside to tend to Lila. Mason flipped the table over, yelling curses. “Forget the wedding feast! We’re not having it at all!” Plates and bowls crashed down around me, shattering into sharp pieces. He jabbed a finger at me and roared, ordering me to clean up the mess at once, or he’d make me regret it. Eyes stinging, I clutched my throbbing hand and stood frozen, feeling the last soft thing inside me calcify. Just then, Luke walked in, sharp in a suit, his arrogance like a second skin. He took in the whole scene. My heart skipped a beat. Memories of the fifty years I’d spent by his side in my previous life flashed through my mind. I remembered how he’d stepped in to shield me when my parents slapped me and screamed that I was shameless. My throat tightened, and I couldn’t help but whisper his name, my voice trembling with tears. Luke’s voice came out like ice water. “You’d better behave yourself and stop trying to hurt Lila.” I went rigid, staring at him in utter disbelief. He was reborn too. He stepped closer, cold and cruel, and shoved me into the corner. His fingers dug into my chin, and when he spoke, each word landed like a blade. “Lila told me everything. You always picked on her. But luring her into that cornfield? You pushed her onto me while I was drugged. Ruined her. Then you called the villagers to destroy her reputation. How could you be so evil?” My heart collapsed under the weight of it. Biting down on my trembling lip, I stammered, “I brought them to save you…” Luke scoffed and cut me off mid-sentence, his gaze cold and distrustful. “Spare me your tears and lies. You better pray we never cross paths again. Or I’ll make you pay.” The last flicker of warmth in my chest went dark. I wiped my tears, shoved him aside, and walked out. Behind me, he went into the bedroom, to comfort Lila, I guessed. I headed for the woodshed. Lila had dumped all my things there without a second thought. My clothes and books had been torn to shreds on purpose. Head bowed, I picked up the pieces one by one. From behind the wall, I heard a man’s deep, gentle voice soothing Lila. It was the same voice he’d used on me in another life—after every fight, every wound he’d stitched with sweet nothingness. Soon enough, the noises grew softer, more intimate. My heart felt like it was being carved out with a dull blade. I stopped sorting out my things. Just grabbed a few clothes and my acceptance letter, then left without a sound. At the train station, I bought a ticket for the earliest train to Vancross. If I had lost my love, this time, I was going to seize the future that rightfully belonged to me.
