It was the second month since my boyfriend Tyler Vance vanished. And there he was. Right on the street.

He was running his mouth, cocky as hell. “Disappearing? Obviously I faked it. My girl’s way too clingy—she needed a wake-up call.”

“I got Gavin to cover for me. She didn’t suspect a thing.”

Gavin Hayes. His best friend.

I acted like I didn’t hear a word. Later, when I got home, a man wrapped his arms around me from behind. “Any leads on him today?”

“No.” I kissed Gavin and let the regret soak into my voice. “He might actually be dead.”

Tyler had been missing for two months. I spotted him by pure chance.

He was with his crew, wearing that same arrogant look. “Dude, you’ve been ‘missing’ so long we barely even see you anymore.”

“What can I say?” Tyler leaned back, relaxed. “Hailey’s too clingy, always up in my shit. She had to learn.”

“How’d you even come up with the whole vanishing act?”

“That was me.” The girl beside him tossed her hair, thrilled. “You really think this dumbass could dream up something that brilliant? He needed my help.”

“Yeah, yeah. You’re the evil genius.” Tyler shot her a doting smile.

I knew that girl. Lila Moore. The only girl in Tyler’s inner circle.

“But seriously—won’t Hailey get suspicious if you go this far?”

“I got Gavin covering for me. It’s handled.”

Everyone nodded like it all clicked.

“No wonder. Gavin’s got his back—who’s gonna question that?”

“Gavin’s solid. That’s all there is to it.”

Lila snorted. “Please. It’s only working because Hailey’s an idiot.”

I waited for Tyler to push back. Instead, his voice dropped soft and coaxing. “Exactly. She’s nowhere near as smart or hot as you.”

The others whooped. This was obviously nothing new.

“Dude, just get with Lila already. Why even bother with a girlfriend?”

“I don’t shit where I eat.”

“Screw you. I wouldn’t touch you either.” They tore into each other, but under the table their legs kept grazing back and forth.

Eventually someone asked, “You can’t stay missing forever. When are you coming back?”

“Gotta wait.” Tyler sounded bulletproof. “The second Hailey’s completely losing her mind over me—that’s when I show up.”
