I opened my phone and started quietly looking for jobs.

I updated my LinkedIn profile and bought a train ticket to New York.

The next morning, it was pouring rain.

I rushed downstairs, hoping to catch a ride to work with Cole.

We worked at the same institute—he was a researcher and I was just an assistant.

As I ran toward the car, I saw Cole and Grace inside.

They were talking about something, heads close together.

I knocked on the window. He didn’t even look up.

He just drove off.

“Cole, wait—”

I chased after him, slipped, and scraped my elbow on the wet pavement.

He still didn’t see me.

He never saw me when Grace was there.

I wiped the blood and mud off my arm and ran to the train station.

I was late to work.

Just as I walked in, Cole and Grace passed by me.

Their smiles faded when they saw my face.

“Is this how you show up as an assistant? It’s already this late.”

I tried to hold back the hurt.

“Why didn’t you wait for me this morning?”

Before Cole could answer, Grace cut in.

“It’s not that he didn’t want to, Luna.”

“You don’t understand—every second matters in the lab. We can’t afford to wait around for anyone.”

She patted my shoulder like she was trying to calm me down.

Cole sighed.

He looked at me like I was being unreasonable.

“Everyone knows it rains in the morning,” he said.

“You could’ve left earlier. I’ve told you this since we were kids—learn to be disciplined.”

“I don’t expect you to be like Grace, but can’t you at least do your job?”

When Grace forgot her bag, he was always patient.

He’d laugh and call her a genius in the lab but a total mess at everything else.

I didn’t bother arguing.

He suddenly stepped back, pretending we weren’t even connected.

Someone was coming.

Cole said the institute didn’t allow dating—so we had to keep things quiet.

The same coworkers would stop and tease them, calling them the cutest couple.

“Foster and Bennett—our two rising stars! Another sweet morning together?”

I kept my head down. I was used to it.

Around here, they looked like they belonged together.

And I was just someone in the background.

“Look at that bag,” someone said.

“That’s the new Chanel—super expensive. Cole must really care about her.”

I glanced over.

Grace’s bag was beautiful.

I’d told Cole I liked it once.

He said he was too busy to figure out which one to buy, so he got something cheap online.

But Grace had the real one.

“Hey, you—the assistant. Can’t you see they’re working?”

“Get them coffee. Come on.”

I blinked back the sting in my chest and hurried to get the coffee.

But just as I brought it over, Grace got excited about something she was saying.

Her hand swung up, and the hot coffee spilled.

It ran down my sleeve. I winced.

Cole pushed me aside. “Grace, are you okay?!”

He checked her hands carefully.

Then he started gathering the papers on the table, checking every page.
