For Five Years, He Took Revenge on the Wrong Woman Chapter 03

It felt as though all the air around me had vanished.

Liam put a steadying hand on my shoulder, hesitating as if he wanted to say something.

I stopped him.

“Don’t call me Mrs. Serrano anymore. My name is Calista Orsini.”

I wanted to be an Orsini again.

I looked through the telescope once more.

Crooked bunny decals were stuck haphazardly to the floor-to-ceiling window across the street.

I had once decorated a room with the same kind of decals.

Silas had called them ugly.

“Who puts things like these on floor-to-ceiling windows anymore? I don’t care. Take them down.”

He hated them and couldn’t stand the sight of them.

Warm golden light filled the apartment. Caterina, dressed in pink pajamas, curled into Silas’s arms.

I watched her lips move.

Thanks to years of scandals involving Silas and his mistresses, I had learned to read lips.

“Silas, I don’t want you to go back, but I’m scared. I’m scared of what Mrs. Serrano might do. Didn’t you say she was mentally ill? What if her medication doesn’t work? What if she hurts my baby?”

She trembled like a frightened bird.

Silas soothed her with endless patience.

“Don’t be afraid. She wouldn’t dare. She’s carrying a baby too. If she hurts you…”

Caterina asked tentatively, “Then would you still let her keep her baby?”

Silas said nothing. He only closed his eyes.

Cold seeped through me until even my fingertips went numb.

I stared at him, committing the sight of him to memory.

I sat beside the drafty window and watched them through the telescope until the sky began to brighten.

I had sent Liam away. He had left me with only a cup of hot water.

I watched Silas hold Caterina gently until she fell asleep.

I watched him wrap an arm around her with quiet satisfaction.

Then I watched him slip out of bed and into the kitchen.

The heir to a crime family who had never set foot in a kitchen naturally had no idea how to make breakfast.

He had learned to cook for me.

He had once soothed me to sleep. He had once kissed me before I even opened my eyes in the morning.

He used to tell me, “Who says a fisherman’s daughter has to take care of everyone? From now on, I’ll take care of you.”

“Calista, no one will ever dare say you aren’t good enough for the Serrano family. You pulled me out of the sea, and I’ll protect you for the rest of my life.”

Yet Silas was the reason I now fell asleep alone and woke in the middle of the night to an empty bed.

He was the one who had taken me from Gloucester into the Serrano family.

He was also the one who had gone from calling me “Cali” to coldly using my full name.

…

Caterina jolted awake in bed, covering her ears as she cried out.

“Silas, I just dreamed Mrs. Serrano found me and said she was going to beat me to death and kill the baby! I’m scared. I’m so scared… Do you think she’s watching me right now, planning how to hurt me?”

Silas swept his gaze around the room before locking onto the apartment building across the street.

…

I braced myself against the wall and stood, intending to get out before they reached me. Suddenly, a figure moved in front of me.

“Don’t move!”

The next second, pain shot through my knee as someone forced me to the floor.

A voice above me said, “Go easy on her. She’s pregnant.”

The person pinning me down didn’t loosen their grip.

“Who cares? The way Mr. Serrano’s acting, she might not be Mrs. Serrano much longer.”

“Let me go!” I gritted my teeth and struggled as the pain in my abdomen, which had finally subsided, flared again.

Someone bound my wrists behind my back with coarse rope and dragged me to Silas.
