MAREN’S POV

The next few days passed peacefully enough.

Until the weekend, when my husband came home from work and quietly pulled me into the bedroom.

“Did you mistreat Elara?”

“What?”

“Look at the messages Colin sent me.

I frowned and took his phone.

The message was basically saying that Colin and his wife had only sent Elara to our house because we were family. If we didn’t want to take care of her, we shouldn’t have agreed to let her stay with

us in the first place. But after agreeing, we were now treating the two girls differently.

I almost laughed out of anger.

“How ridiculous! He dares to say ‘if we didn’t want her here, we shouldn’t have agreed’? Did I ever agree to this? I woke up one morning and heard someone knocking on the door. When I opened it, your niece was standing there with a suitcase. They just dumped her on us without asking, and now they have the nerve to turn around and blame us?”

“And your brother Colin only sent me $215 and expected me to pay his daughter’s $49,000 tuition?

What, does he think we’re fools?”

“Come on, honey. Don’t say it like that. Elara is still the kid you watched grow up, isn’t she?”

“Don’t start with that. If it weren’t for that, I never would have agreed to let her stay here. Besides,

since you care so much about her, she wants tutoring now. Why don’t you pay for it?”

“I don’t have that kind of money. You’re the one who handles our finances.”

“Exactly. Do you really think you make that much money? I’ve already paid the rent, utilities, Brielle’s tuition, and her tutoring expenses. I’ve spent a total of $100,000. Her own parents aren’t willing to spend money on her, and I certainly don’t have extra money lying around for her.”

My husband clearly hadn’t realized how expensive it was to have a child attend school off campus.

And luckily, I had never told him that I also made a good amount of money writing novels every/ month.

Otherwise, with his salary alone, he actually thought we could afford to support two kids at the best academy in the entire pack territory? He could dream on.

“Alright, alright. Providing her with food and a place to stay is already more than enough.

Everything else is her parents’ responsibility. We don’t need to worry about it.”

After saying that, I turned around to go wash up. But just as I stepped out, I saw the hallway door

close.

Elara.

She must have heard everything. But I hadn’t said anything wrong. If she heard it, then so be it.
