Mom, Dad’s Getting Married Today. My Anniversary Call From The Future Chapter 03

Then my mom sent me a voice message.

“Maren, how was your anniversary with Rory? Come home for dinner sometime. Your dad and I miss you.”

Hearing her voice, I broke.

Tears hit the screen before I could stop them.

In the future Ruby described, my parents lost everything.

Their house. Their reputation. Their peace.

I wouldn’t let that happen.

I found the unknown number and typed: “Ruby, I’ve made up my mind.”

“I won’t let the future play out the way it did.”

She replied fast: “Mom, I support you. Just stay safe.”

Something in my chest softened.

Then she sent an address.

The Plaza. Private Dining Room. Dad’s celebrating his new marriage there tonight.

I stared at the screen. That was where Rory had proposed to me.

Where he said, “Maren, I’ll only ever love you.”

I got dressed.

When I pushed open the door, the room was loud with cheers.

“Kiss her! Kiss her!”

Under the lights, Rory and Lena stood at the center of a circle, kissing like they had nothing to hide.

Gemma was beaming.

Everyone who’d toasted my marriage just days ago was smiling now—for them.

Then they saw me.

The noise stopped.

Rory pulled back from Lena.

His face went pale.

Lena turned, confused. “What’s going on? Who is she?”

Gemma jumped up, blocking me, forcing a laugh.

“She’s my friend—probably looking for me. Let me take her outside.”

I stepped past her and looked straight at Lena.

“Hi. I’m Maren. Rory’s wife of two years.”

The room went dead silent.

I pulled a stack of photos from my bag and dropped them on the table.

“You don’t have to believe me, Lena.”

“But every single one of these is proof of eight years with him.”

Photos scattered across the table.

Rory tying my shoes on the campus track.

Him putting his graduation cap on my head.

And the two of us, squeezed into that tiny kitchen, cooking together.

Each one was real.

In every one, he looked at me like he loved me.

Rory was the first to break the silence.

His face was dark. “Maren, have you had enough?”

Lena rose, trembling, staring at the photos.

Gemma grabbed my arm, nails pressing in.

“Maren, stop this. Let’s talk outside.”

I shook her off. “Gemma, I trusted you. You knew everything—and you still lied to me.”

Her face flushed.

“I was trying to protect you! What do you gain from humiliating yourself like this?”

Rory stepped closer, his voice low and sharp.

“You’re embarrassing yourself in front of everyone. Have some self-respect.”

Gemma joined in.

“Wake up, Maren. The one who’s not loved is the one who doesn’t belong.”

“Rory gave you a decent exit—take it.”

Rory’s friends laughed and chimed in.

“The legal wife is Lena. That’s what the marriage license says. No amount of old photos changes that.”

Lena finally recovered.

She walked over to Rory, took his arm, and lifted her chin.

“So you’re the one trying to take my husband. I’m his legal wife.”

“No matter how much you scream, that won’t change.”

“Give it up, Maren—don’t make this more pathetic than it already is.”

I looked at all of them and felt nothing but a hollow kind of calm.

I gathered my photos, one by one, and walked out.

“Okay,” I said.

“I’m done.”
