Mom, Dad’s Getting Married Today. My Anniversary Call From The Future Chapter 02

Gemma was quiet for a moment.

When she finally spoke, her voice had gone cold.

“Maren, we’ve been friends for a long time, so I’ll give you some advice—walk away quietly.”

“Rory’s always loved Lena. You were just someone he couldn’t bring himself to leave behind.”

“Make this ugly, and you’re the one who’ll end up looking bad.”

She hung up before I could respond.

I sank back onto the couch.

All my life, Gemma had told me we were best friends.

I never knew that the people closest to you could hurt you the most.

The door unlocked.

Rory walked in.

He saw my face—pale, hollow—and his expression flickered.

“Maren, I’m sorry. A big client came in today. I got stuck at the office.”

“I almost missed our anniversary.”

He looked genuinely sorry. He set a pile of gifts on the table.

I stared at them.

They felt wrong.

Men only brought expensive presents when they had something to hide.

I looked up at him. “Rory. Did you do something you shouldn’t have?”

His smile tightened for a second.

He reached for my hand.

“The company’s going through a tough stretch. Don’t overthink it.”

I pulled my hand back.

“I saw you at the County Clerk’s Office today. Getting married to someone else.”

“Rory, you’ve been lying for eight years. Aren’t you tired?”

His expression shifted.

He stared at me for a long moment, then something in his shoulders relaxed—

like he’d finally stopped pretending.

“How did you find out? Well—there’s no point hiding it anymore.”

My throat burned. He wasn’t guilty.

He wasn’t panicked. He was just tired of the act.

I turned and started packing. Clothes into a suitcase.

I couldn’t stay in the same room as him.

He followed me, grabbing my wrist when he saw I was serious.

“Maren! I know you’re angry. But you used to say my heart was enough for you.”

I pulled free.

I grabbed the marriage license I’d kept like a treasure—and realized how fake it looked now.

The ink was dull. The seal barely had any texture.

I’d worshipped this thing. I’d held it before bed like a promise.

I threw it at him.

“You lied to me for two years with this.”

“And on our anniversary, you went to marry someone else.”

“You make me sick!”

He picked it up, unfazed. “It’s just a piece of paper.”

“Why are you making such a big deal out of it?”

“Aren’t things fine the way they are? I still love you. I still take care of you. Lena won’t interfere with us.”

“Maren, don’t be greedy.”

I couldn’t breathe.

His phone rang.

The screen read “Baby Lena.”

He answered, his voice softening instantly.

“I’m on my way. Don’t drink too much.”

When he hung up, his patience was gone.

“Maren, what are you even trying to accomplish? It’s not just me—Gemma can confirm it too. You’re the one who came between us.”

He stepped closer, his words landing like blows.

“Your parents have been teachers their whole lives. They care about their reputation.”

” Are you really going to put them through that?”

“So be smart. Pretend none of this happened.”

The door slammed behind him.

I was alone.

In one day, I’d lost my husband—and my best friend.
