“He’s getting a marriage license with someone else.”

I laughed. “You could’ve made it more believable. Rory and I have been together eight years. Married two.”

“Everyone knows he loves me.”

She started crying harder. “Mom, my name is Ruby.”

“You picked that name yourself. Your marriage license is fake. Everyone’s been lying to you.”

“Go to the Clerk’s Office. Dad and Lena are about to walk out.”

It sounded crazy.

My head told me not to believe it. But my feet were already moving.

Outside the Clerk’s Office, I saw them.

A crowd of familiar faces. Rory with his arm around a woman I’d never seen before. He kissed her forehead.

My best friend Gemma was wiping tears—of joy.

“Congratulations, Rory and Lena. After seven years, you finally made it.”

For eight years I’d been with him. For seven of them, he’d had someone else.

I stood in the wind, nails digging into my palms.

After college, I’d helped Rory build his company from nothing.

We’d lived in a basement. Shared one meal across two days.

I thought we’d survived the hard parts.
