The Real Heiress Is Overworked, Forget Love and Just Pay Her Chapter 04

I crossed the room in three strides and jabbed the power button over and over. I’d bought this laptop with

three months of my salary after graduation. Every single piece of work I’d ever poured my heart into was on

When I realized it was completely dead, my brain short-circuited. Pure rage flooded in. “Vera, you did this on

purpose!”

She blinked. “Gemma, what are you talking about? I would never. It was an accident-I barely spilled any water on it. I didn’t know it would just… die like that. Don’t be mad. I’ll buy you a new one, okay?”

Her fake innocence made me sick.

But I didn’t say another word. I grabbed the laptop and walked out.

For one thing, I didn’t have the energy for her games. And for another, my client was still waiting on the final

file.

I figured getting it repaired would be simple. It was a major brand with service centers everywhere.

Then the technician got it to boot up. The screen lit up with a flood of viruses. By the time he’d wiped them

all clean, every single file on my drive was gone.

Panic hit me hard. I told him to restore everything.

He worked on it for a while, then shook his head. No luck. He said the files had been permanently deleted

before the computer even crashed.

I froze. “How is that possible?”

He looked at me. “Did anyone else have access to your laptop before this happened?”

Vera’s face surfaced in my mind. No question. She was behind this.

Right then, my phone rang. It was my boss.

The second I picked up, he tore into me. He demanded to know if I had a death wish, screaming about why I’d

cussed out our client.

I stammered that I hadn’t. I basically worshipped my clients. I’d never dare insult them.

He told me to save my excuses. The damage to the company was done. I was fired.

The line went dead. I remembered my phone synced with my laptop. I opened the chat logs and saw a wall of filth I’d supposedly sent. The breath caught in my throat.

I’d beaten out thousands of applicants for that job. Sure, I complained about it nonstop. Joked about quitting every single day. But I never wanted to lose it. Not like this.

I stumbled back to Shaw Estate in a daze, my phone still blowing up.

My work friend messaged me, saying our boss had gone nuclear in the group chat and shared the incident in

industry circles. There was a real chance I’d be blacklisted everywhere.

I was on the verge of tears when Vera walked into my room.

“Gemma, did you get your laptop fixed? If not, I know someone who can-”

I didn’t let her finish. I slapped her. I’m not gonna lie-the rage just took over. But I didn’t mean to actually hurt

her. I barely even touched her.

I still have no idea how she managed to stumble backward all the way to my vanity. A paring knife I’d left on

top wobbled, tipped over, and somehow plunged right into her arm.

Vera screamed. So did Chase. He’d just walked in and saw the whole aftermath. He rushed over and shielded

her behind him.

“Gemma, have you lost your mind? Are you trying to kill her?”

I just stood there, watching. No emotion. The whole thing was so absurd I almost laughed.

Chase’s face darkened. “You think this is funny?”

“Chase, don’t yell at her,” Vera sobbed. “It’s my fault. I ruined her laptop. She had every right to be upset.”

Chase’s head whipped toward me, pure disbelief on his face. “All of this over a stupid laptop? You tried to kill

her?”

He looked at me like I was a monster. “Gemma, I never knew you were this evil. What is your problem with

Vera? Why do you keep hurting her over and over?”

Then, Mr. and Mrs. Shaw rushed in. They went white at the sight of the blood and demanded to know what

happened.

Vera gave them her usual version. She made it sound like she was accepting all the blame, but somehow I still ended up looking like the unhinged psycho.

Mr. Shaw stared at me, pure disappointment in his eyes. “Is this true, Gemma? Over a laptop?”
