Never Offend the Hidden Don Chapter 07

They turned and walked toward the Porsche.

Victor opened the door for her and shielded the top of her head as she got in. Every move looked thoughtful

and careful.

The car slowly drove away and disappeared into the rain.

I stood there with my daughter in my arms. Raindrops tapped softly against the umbrella above us.

“Daddy.” My daughter rubbed her cheek against mine. “Who was that man?”

“An old… friend.”

“Oh.” She nodded like she understood, then whispered, “I don’t like him.”

I paused. “Why?”

“He looked at you like the bad guy in a cartoon.” Her little nose wrinkled. “And his smile was fake.”

I couldn’t help laughing.

I kissed her forehead. “Too smart for your own good. Come on. Tomato meatball pasta.”

“Yay! Tomato meatball pasta!”

By the time we neared the old neighborhood, the rain had grown heavier.

I was about to turn into the alley when two black Mercedes shot out from the side without warning.

One blocked the front.

One boxed me in from behind.

The doors opened almost at the same time.

Several men in black suits stepped out quickly and closed in with blank faces.

At last, the passenger door opened.

Victor stepped out slowly, playing with the handle of a black umbrella.

Without Isabella there, the polished gentleman act peeled right off.

His eyes were like a snake’s, cold and vicious.

My daughter froze at the scene.

Her small arms tightened around my neck, and she buried her face in my shoulder.

I patted her back and looked at Victor. “What is this?”

“Nothing much. I just wanted to talk.” Victor stopped three steps in front of me. “Enzo, seven years changed

you. You’ve learned how to play dumb.”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“You don’t?”

Victor let out a cold laugh and stepped closer. “Are you really going to tell me today was a coincidence?

Enzo, that kind of crap might fool Isabella. It won’t work on me. Tell me. Why did you go out of your way to

get close to her?”

I held my daughter tighter, my voice still calm. “It really was random. I picked up her ride request. We talked a

little, mostly about life.”

“Life?” Victor smiled like he had heard a joke. “Enzo, look at yourself. You drive a piece-of-crap rideshare car.

You live in a rental so small it barely counts as a room.”

“You dress like you pulled your clothes out of a donation bin. You run into a rich ex like Isabella, and all you

want is a friendly chat? You think I’m three years old?”

His gaze moved over the trembling child in my arms.

Disdain flickered in his eyes. “Life must be hard with a little burden like that. Did you think if you stirred up

Isabella’s old feelings and pity, you could get something out of her?”

“Or maybe you were dreaming about something even more ridiculous?”

I said nothing.

He took my silence as guilt.

The satisfaction on Victor’s face deepened, and his voice rose with years of suppressed pleasure.

“I’m telling you, Enzo. Stop dreaming. You lost completely seven years ago, and today you’re still nothing.

Isabella is my wife now. She’s mine.”

“You’re not even in her league. Do you think you can still do whatever you want because you’re the family heir? Look at yourself. Your family threw you away a long time ago.”

“You’re just a bastard with nowhere to go.”

I listened quietly.

My family had thrown me away?

Did he not know I had already become the don?

Then again, a man like him wasn’t high enough to know.
