After I Died, the Alpha Who Abandoned Me Lost His Mind Chapter 03

My eyes burned red with anger and hurt as I shouted at him.

“I won’t apologize because I didn’t do it. There are security cameras inside the private club. Check the footage right now.”

Adrian hesitated for a split second.

Then Selena suddenly cried out in pain, and the heart-rate monitor on her wrist began blaring an alarm.

Adrian immediately pulled her into his arms and never mentioned the security footage again.

He looked at me with bitter disappointment.

“Erin, why can you never admit when you’re wrong? One apology could have ended this. But if you’re determined to make a scene, then maybe the marriage arrangement between the Black and Carter families needs to be reconsidered. Tonight’s engagement ceremony is off.”

In that moment, I finally realized that he might never have truly loved me.

Whenever he had to choose between Selena and me, he had never once stood firmly on my side.

Just like my parents, who would always choose my older sister first.

I heard myself say, “Then end the engagement.”

Adrian stood there without moving.

He stared at me for a long time before giving a cold laugh.

“Fine. Remember, this was your choice. But people who do wrong have to pay for it. If you refuse, I’ll show you exactly what happens when you cross an Alpha.”

His threat later became my reality.

I had been young then, with no understanding of how terrifying his power truly was.

I thought I was healthy, educated, and capable, and Adrian and I had never completed a permanent mate bond.

I believed I could leave him and still survive.

The truth was that I could barely find a single opportunity to keep myself alive.

Once I lost my position as the Carter family heiress and the protection of the Black Pack, I became nothing more than a woman discarded by two powerful packs.

Worse, Adrian had publicly declared that he intended to punish me.

I could not find a job, and every apartment application I submitted was rejected.

During that period, the only work I could get was selling expensive liquor on commission in bars.

Adrian seemed determined to flaunt his devotion to Selena where I could see it.

On social media, he publicly placed her under his protection and all but announced that she would become the Black Pack’s future Luna.

He also poured endless entertainment-industry resources into her, turning a minor actress who could barely deliver a line into an award-winning star.

I moved several times before finally escaping to another city.

Yet six years later, I still crossed paths with them.

It did not matter.

I would be dead soon, and they would not be able to hurt me for much longer.

When I regained consciousness, I was lying in a hospital bed at the medical center.

My phone suddenly rang.

The call was from Blue Pearl Animal Hospital.

“Ms. Carter, do you actually want Mochi to survive or not? The treatment bill has been overdue for far too long. Why haven’t you paid it? We’ve already stopped some of Mochi’s medication. If we don’t receive payment today, we’ll have no choice but to discharge Mochi and have you take your dog home.”

Panic tightened my throat, and I nearly burst into tears.

“Please don’t stop the medication. Today is payday. I’ll contact my manager right now and transfer the money immediately. Please, just give me a few more hours.”

The person on the other end fell silent for a moment.

“Fine. The full balance must be paid by the end of today. This animal hospital isn’t a charity, and we have procedures we need to follow.”

As soon as the call ended, I phoned my manager.

I had not received the thousand-dollar tip, but today was still supposed to be payday.

My monthly base pay was $3,200.

After paying for Mochi’s treatment, I would still have enough to buy a supply of dog food and leave Mochi with Martha, who took in stray animals.

There would even be enough left to order the cheapest urn I could find for myself.

I calculated every expense down to the last dollar.

Then my manager’s next words made me realize the situation was far worse than I had imagined.

“I’m sorry, Erin. We can’t pay you.”

My voice came out hoarse.

“Why? Even without commission, you still owe me my $3,200 base pay. And I was the one who handled last night’s sale.”

My manager was silent for several seconds before she finally explained.

“It’s because of that order. What exactly did you do to offend Mr. Black? Last night, he placed a $300,000 deposit with the store. His only condition was that we couldn’t pay you a single cent. He said that if you tried to challenge the decision, the Black Group would cover all the legal costs. Erin, there’s nothing I can do. I can cover your IV bill from last night. Would that help at all?”

I could no longer hear the rest of what she was saying.

A violent pain exploded through my head, and the thick metallic taste of blood flooded my throat.

By the time I understood what was happening, blood had already sprayed across the spotless white sheets.
