He Faked Poverty, Tricked Me Into an Abortion, All for a Bet Chapter 02

The moment we got home, Ethan placed the fried rice in front of me.

I could not taste a thing and only sat there, mechanically shoveling one bite after another into my mouth.

“Erin, I know you’ve been upset these past two days, but with our situation right now, we really couldn’t keep the baby. I can handle struggling, but how could I let you and our child struggle with me? Please don’t be sad, okay? I promise we’ll have another baby someday. Once I’ve made something of myself, I’ll give you and our child the best life possible.”

I froze, and then the tears spilled from my eyes before I could stop them.

Ethan hurried to wipe them away, pulled me tightly into his arms, and murmured, “Erin, don’t cry. This is my fault. I’m not good enough. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

By the end, his voice had turned hoarse.

But all I could see was Ethan sitting in that private suite, laughing and flirting easily with the bottle-service girls while they crowded close to him.

I remembered the careless sneer on his face when he said I would never find out.

“Ethan…”

I clenched the hem of his shirt, wanting to ask whether he was hiding something from me and why he had lied.

Had he lied to me just for fun?

Or had he hidden his identity because he was afraid I was greedy and would only want him for his money?

But I could not force out a single question.

My mind filled with memories of all the years we had endured poverty together, the sweetness and sincerity between us, and the love I had once believed would never change.

Had all of it been fake?

When I had cried until I had no strength left, I lay quietly in Ethan’s arms and asked, “Ethan, do you love me?”

“Don’t be silly. How could I not love you?”

I had asked him that question more than once before, never because I doubted him, but simply because I liked hearing him say he loved me.

But this time, I did not dare look into his eyes.

No.

You don’t love me.

Ethan, you never loved me at all.
