He Asked Me Out to Get Back at Her, I Gave Him a Rulebook Instead Chapter 07

Vivienne came back to the dorm late that night.

She didn’t look good.

A single comment from the/stream drifted past. [The MMC didn’t race, so the scene where he finds the FMC doubled over with cramps and takes care of her never happened.]

I glanced at Vivienne.

Her face was pale, and she sat stiff in her chair, not moving.

Her jaw was tight. “I underestimated you.”

“What the hell did you do to him?”

I poured a mug of hot tea and set it on her desk with some Midol without a word.

“I don’t owe you an explanation.”

For a second, something in Vivienne’s face almost cracked. Then it locked shut again.

She didn’t speak to me for the rest of the night.

She didn’t touch the tea, either.

The next morning, Vivienne didn’t even look up from her phone. “Ronan’s swinging by anyway. I told him to

give us both a ride. That’s fine, right?”

The stream of floating comments fired up.

[The FMC is so mad she’s not thinking straight. She unblocked the MMC herself and used the bet as leverage

to force him to say yes.]

[Please tell me the side character isn’t about to block him over this.]

Ronan looked stone-faced when he looked at Vivienne.

He typed without looking up. [Are you seriously doing this because I told you to keep the bet quiet?]

[I told you, she doesn’t let me have girls on my phone!]

I reached for his hand. He killed his phone screen instantly, face tight.

Vivienne stared out the window, expression shut.

In the car, Vivienne kept pressing a hand to her stomach. Ronan never once looked in the rearview mirror.

At a red light, Ronan checked his phone.

Maren hadn’t blocked him. He stared at the screen, weirdly unsettled. Why hadn’t she blocked him?

What did that mean?

She wasn’t going to block him?

After he dropped us off, Vivienne’s reply came through. [She’ll find out eventually. You’re the one who made the bet. Too scared to own it?]

[Your family’s going to say yes to mine. We both know that. And Maren? Keep her if you want. For now.]

She’d decided against Landon’s plan. No truth or dare confession.

This was her version of showing her hand instead.

Ronan’s reply was ice. [Don’t text me when she’s around.]

Vivienne stared at her phone, something unreadable moving behind her eyes. Then she shut it off.

The stream of floating comments kept coming.

[The FMC is playing 4D chess. She locked in the family alliance first, then gave him permission to date the side character so he wouldn’t rebel. And she’s keeping the bet a secret to hold it over him.]

[Let’s be real, the side character was never going to marry into that family. Not with her background.]

[Oh shut up. It’s fiction. Let her have this.]

[Wasn’t the MMC’s first kiss supposed to be with the FMC? He’s been kissing the side character nonstop. Why is the FMC still circling him? Move on already.]

I laughed under my breath.

I was never planning to stick around.
