She Played Weak for Sympathy, So I Walked Away Without Looking Back Chapter 03

They both turned to look at me.

Camille immediately released Julian and shrank back timidly.

“I-I’m sorry, Natalie. Did I wake you two up again?”

I pulled out my phone and tapped in 911.

“Since someone broke into your house and threatened you, why don’t I call the police?”

“Natalie!”

Julian’s voice was low and sharp.

“She just went through something traumatic. Calling the police right now will only put her through more stress. How can you not understand that?”

A laugh escaped me.

“So we’re supposed to ignore it? Camille, whenever something happens to you, your first thought is never to call the police. It’s to call my husband.”

The color drained from Camille’s face.

“You two are the only people I know in this city, so…”

“Your house is covered by security cameras, and this is a gated community with tight security. Anyone who managed to get inside is a serious threat. If you don’t report this, he could come back.”

I cut her off and hit Call.

The next second, Julian snatched the phone out of my hand and hurled it to the floor.

It struck the ground with a crack. The screen shattered, catching the twisted fury on his face.

“Enough!”

“She’s your best friend. Stop attacking her!”

I stood frozen.

He patted Camille on the shoulder.

“I’m staying here with her tonight in case the man comes back. I’ll go home after sunrise.”

“Natalie, you can go home on your own.”

I held his gaze.

“Julian, if you insist on staying here with her, we’re getting divorced.”

His face darkened instantly.

“Natalie, are you seriously going to make a scene over this?”

“I’m not making a scene.”

“She’s your best friend. I’m not abandoning her when she’s in danger!”

“She’s still another woman,” I said, looking coldly at Camille. “I will not accept my husband spending the night alone with another woman.”

“Camille, even I don’t have a key to your house. Why does my husband? Are we really best friends, or was this your plan from the start—to let Julian come and go behind my back?”

Camille swayed, her face deathly pale.

“He drove me home last time. I thought it might be convenient for him to have a spare.”

“Julian, please go home with Natalie. I don’t want the two of you fighting because of me…”

Yet as she spoke, she clung to Julian’s shoulder, trembling as though she were about to faint.

Julian swept her into his arms, his voice turning icy.

“Stop talking nonsense.”

“I’m only staying to keep her company. I’ll sit beside her bed and keep you on FaceTime. Natalie, you have a filthy mind.”

He carried Camille into the bedroom and slammed the door behind them.

I turned away and left.

The freezing wind cut through me the moment I stepped outside. It was two in the morning, and there wasn’t a cab or rideshare in sight.

I walked nearly four miles home.

Pregnancy had already left my feet swollen. By the time I arrived, both feet were blistered.

Tears streamed down my face.

I remembered the year Julian had loved me most. At a track meet that year, I twisted my ankle, and even though he had just finished the 800-meter race himself, he carried me all the way to the first-aid station.

Now that same man had let me walk home alone on a freezing winter night.

What a joke.

I pulled out the divorce settlement agreement and signed my name with a firm stroke.

Then I booked a flight to Savannah for three days later.

“Julian, there’s no way back for us now.”
