He Bet I’d Crawl Back—My New Husband Was Waiting Outside Chapter 06

When Sebastian left, no one noticed.

No one cared.

But he didn’t go back to New York.

He bought a high-rise unit near the estate with a clear view of the vineyard.

Every day, aside from remote meetings with Varenna Group, he drove to the estate’s iron gates.

He brought flowers, never the same arrangement twice.

He brought gifts, every single thing I’d mentioned wanting over the past nine years that he’d never bothered to give me.

All so he could wait for me to appear.

I didn’t acknowledge him.

I didn’t change a single thing about my life because of him.

That miserable marriage taught me one thing:

A woman should never rearrange her entire life to accommodate a man.

Work when it’s time to work. See people when it’s time to see people.

The only person I needed to make happy was myself.

I assumed Sebastian was only clinging to me because Don Marcello couldn’t let me go. Maybe the old man had ordered Sebastian to earn my forgiveness before he’d be allowed to remain the

Varenna heir.

So I called Marcello myself.

I told him I had a fiance now, a new life. I asked him not to force Sebastian to stay in England out of sympathy for me.

Marcello was quiet for a long time.

In the end, all he said was:

“Child.”

“No one ordered him to do this.”

i hung up.

For an entire month

Sebastian kept his vigil outside the estate gates.

Every single day, just to catch a glimpse of me through a car window.

The first one to crack wasn’t me.

It was Declan.

Late one night

Declan and I had just come back from a party.

From a distance, we could see Sebastian standing under a streetlamp, holding a bouquet of white

roses.

I’d barely stepped out of the car when the sky behind me exploded with tens of thousands of colored

fireworks.

Declan had once tortured himself by watching the video of Sebastian’s proposal to me, over and

over.

Young and naive as I’d been, I was swept away by a sky full of fireworks and said yes with my whole

heart.

Now, seeing me look up at the sky, the always-composed Declan finally snapped.

He stormed up to

Sebastian and threw a punch.

“Sebastian Varenna.”

“Have you no shame?”

“Every single day, scheming to get my fiancee to spare you one more glance.”

“I’ve never met anyone more pathetic than you.”

Sebastian hit back fast.

“I’m pathetic? Then what does that make you?”

“Ginevra and I were married for nine years.”

“If she hadn’t lost the ability to have children because of that accident, I never would have let Tessa keep the baby.”

“She’s just convinced herself I don’t love her.”

“Once I make things right, she’ll break off your engagement in a heartbeat and come back to me

Declan laughed, the kind of laugh that comes from pure fury.

Another punch sent Sebastian to the ground.

When I lost the baby in that crash, it was Declan who dropped everything, flew from Europe to New York, and stayed by my side without leaving for a single moment.

Sebastian had claimed he was too busy with company business.

In reality, he’d bought two tickets to Prague and spent the week wining and dining Tessa, touring every corner of the city with her.

I tried to break up the fight.

But the two of them were locked in, neither willing to stop.

Two patrol cars happened to pass by.

One of the officers made eye contact with Sebastian, then immediately got out to intervene.

All three of us were taken to a nearby private hospital.

Once we arrived, I’d been at Declan’s side the entire time, but a nurse pulled me away and wheeled

me into Sebastian’s room instead.

The door locked behind me.

And then I understood.

The fireworks. The fight. The patrol cars that just happened to be passing by. This hospital room.

All of it had been arranged in advance by the Varenna family’s private security team.

Sebastian had orchestrated this entire performance for one reason: to get time alone with me.

I almost found it funny.

“Was all this really necessary?”

Sebastian’s eyes were red. Two broken ribs.

He gave me an embarrassed smile.

Then, his voice raw and ragged, he said it word by word:

“Ginevra.”

“I miss you.”

I miss you.

So much I think I’m losing my mind.
