Two weeks into the renovation, Lyra showed up.

She stood in the doorway holding a bag of cranberry cookies, the kind I loved.

“You run off this far and don’t even tell your sister?”

She walked in, looked around, and clicked her tongue.

“This place is kind of small. Want me to invest?”

Her tone was so casual, as if nothing had ever happened.

I pulled up a stool for her.

“Lyra, when the poll went up in the group chat, why did you pick B?”

She froze for a beat, then waved it off with a laugh.

“Oh, come on! Everyone picked B. If I didn’t go along, they would’ve kicked me out.”

“I stayed in the group so I could keep an eye on things for you.”

That’s what I’d assumed too.

I would have kept assuming it, if I hadn’t seen that message.

The day before the ceremony, Lyra had posted in the group chat:

[I got Aurora’s measurements. She’s the same size as Madison. Just use hers.]

[Tomorrow’s Luna Ceremony is a go. My mom has high blood pressure. Madison won’t dare make a

scene.]

I placed my phone in front of her. The smile drained from her face.

“Madison, let me explain.”

She was quiet for a long time. Her eyes slowly turned red.

“You’ve always been better than me at everything. Since we were kids.”

“Stronger wolf. Prettier face. And then you married an Alpha.”

“I’m the older sister, but I’ve spent my whole life standing in my little sister’s shadow.”

“Even the weddings. When I got married, nobody gave me anything.”

“When you got married, Frostvale Pack gave you three hundred thousand dollars in wedding gifts.”

“Everyone says I have such an impressive sister. But who ever asks how I’m doing?”

I nodded.

“So the screenshots. You sent them to me on purpose?”

She wiped her tears.

“I thought once you saw them, you’d cancel the Ceremony yourself.”

“I didn’t think you’d actually throw it all up on the big screen.”

“Things getting this messy isn’t entirely my fault.”

Just like that, she shoved the blame right back into my hands.

I stood up and opened the door.

“Leave the cookies. Get out.”

She couldn’t believe it.

“I’m your sister.”

“You were.”

“Not anymore.”

That night, my mom called. Lyra had gone home and told her I’d turned my back on family.

I sent my mother every screenshot.

The line went silent for a long time.

Finally, I heard her sigh.

“That girl.”

Then she wired me ten thousand dollars.

[For the renovation. If you need more, just say so. Don’t skimp.]

I accepted it.

I used to be so afraid of making Lyra unhappy that I never took anything for myself.

Now I understood that pushing away the people who genuinely loved me was just another way of

punishing myself.

The next day, Lucia showed up.

Her first words through the door:

“Aurora is very upset.”

She crossed her arms and lectured me.

“Aurora never meant to ruin your relationship. The project thing was just her trying to survive in

the Pack.”

“You dissolved the bond, you ran away from home. You’re basically throwing Aurora onto a

burning stake.”

“Be reasonable. Go home. And apologize to Aurora while you’re at it.”

I stared at her for a few seconds, then laughed.

“In your eyes, is everything I do just me being unreasonable?”

She didn’t flinch.

“Isn’t it?”

“You’ve been like this since we were kids. The second you feel wronged, you have to make a federal

case out of it.”

“But life isn’t fair, Madison. It never is.”

“Joseph made a mistake every man makes. Aurora was just jealous that you had it better.”

“They’re both suffering enough already. Why do you have to take things this far?”

I asked her, “And when I was suffering?”

She paused.

“You’re different from them.”

“You’re capable. Joseph loves you. Even if you take a hit, you’re not really going to lose anything.”

I nodded slowly.

Because I could take it. Because I didn’t collapse on the spot. So my pain didn’t count as pain.

“Okay. Get out.”

“Don’t come back. As far as I’m concerned, I don’t know you.”

Her eyes went wide, chest heaving with fury, and she stormed out.

That evening, Maria told me Joseph hadn’t actually fired Aurora. He hadn’t cut ties with her either.

He’d just told her to work from home for a while.

To protect her management clearance, he’d even told the Elder Council that the project lead change had been my idea.

I turned off my phone and went back to painting the walls.
