I booked the earliest flight out, heading to a small town far from Frostvale territory.

On the plane, I drank the Mate Severance Potion I’d bought from a rogue witch before leaving.

The instant it went down, it felt like my soul was being ripped in half. My wolf fought it with everything she had. But somewhere inside that blinding pain, I found something I hadn’t expected.

Peace. Relief. Every emotion I’d been suffocating under for so long just dissolved, all at once, like smoke in the wind.

This time, I chose myself.

Walking down streets where nobody knew my name, I realized for the first time how precious silence could be.

No one barking orders through a mind link.

No one telling me to be more understanding toward Aurora.

No one forcing me into things I didn’t want to do.

On the third day, Maria reached out in secret.

She said when Joseph came home and saw the empty closet, he thought someone had broken in.

It wasn’t until he found the mate dissolution agreement that he realized I had left on my own. He

tried calling me, found out he’d been blocked, and the backlash from the severed Mate Bond sent

his wolf spiraling out of control for the first time in his life.

Maria was laughing on the other end. “Madison, you know what happened?”

“He made every single person in our operations department report to the pack hall. Interrogated all forty-something of us, one by one, asking if we knew where you went.”

“Everyone was so annoyed. And in the end, he still didn’t find out where you are!”

She giggled.

“Madison, don’t worry. I’m on your side. I even chewed the Alpha out to his face! You should’ve seen how dark his expression got. Honestly, I was scared he’d rip me apart!”

I couldn’t help laughing either.

Maria went on.

“Madison, guess what?”

“Yesterday Aurora got a cardboard box delivered. She thought it was a gift from the Alpha!”

“She opened it in front of like a dozen Pack members, and the first thing she saw was “Trash belongs in the trash.””

“Oh my God, it was so satisfying! That was you, right? I’ve had it with that two-faced snake. Absolute legend move!”

I smiled, then hung up.

It was still early. I went to look at a storefront I’d had my eye on.

Six hundred square feet, street-facing, with a row of sycamore trees outside the window.

When the landlady heard I wanted to open a design studio, she dropped the rent to eight hundred a

month.

“Sweetheart, it’s not easy being out here on your own.”

“Start making money first. You can pay me more later.”

I smiled so wide my eyes crinkled, and signed a six-month lease.

On the fifth day, my mom called.

“Madison, Joseph is still kneeling outside our front door. It’s been two days now, and he won’t

leave!”

“Your father chased him off with a broom three times. He says he’s not moving until you come

home.”

“Did you two have a fight?”

I shook my head. “Mom, I dissolved the bond.”

Silence on the other end, then shock.

“No wonder! He’s been saying he fired Aurora, cut all ties with her, even kicked her out of the

Pack!”

“He says if you come back, he’ll agree to anything.”

I said nothing.

“Madison, you and the Alpha have been bonded for fifteen years. If word gets out that your bond fell

apart, the entire Pack will laugh at you. Our family will be a joke!”

“Every couple fights. I think that boy really does love you.”

I let out a quiet laugh.

“Mom, maybe he loves me. But he loves Aurora too.”

“Didn’t you see enough at the Luna Ceremony?”

“I’d never be happy marrying into a situation like that.”

My mother was silent for a long time. Then she sighed.

“Alright. You’re grown. You have your own mind.”

“But Madison, he’s been kneeling out there for two days. You really won’t come back and talk to

him face to face?”

I thought of fifteen years ago, when his first business venture failed and he knelt outside a

creditor’s door all night.

The next day, he held me and cried, said it was all taken care of.

Back then, I was so heartbroken I couldn’t sleep.

Now I realized he was just very good at kneeling. And very good at using it to get what he wanted.

I told my mom:

“Don’t chase him off.”

“When his knees get tired enough, he’ll leave on his own.”

She lowered her voice. “Madison, you’re really not looking back?”

“Mom, I waited fifteen years. Wasn’t that enough?”

The other end of the line went quiet for a long time.

For the first time, she didn’t tell me to endure it.
