“All of our joint projects with the Wells family have been unilaterally suspended.” His father’s face was grim as he slammed a folder onto the desk in front of him. “What the hell did you do?”

Before Beckett could even begin to process that, he was in his car, speeding toward the Capitol.

In the senator’s office, Daphne’s mother was signing documents, her head bowed.

She didn’t look up when he entered.

“Ma’am, where is Daphne? What’s going on?” he demanded.

The senator calmly set down her pen.

Her eyes, so much like Daphne’s, were filled with an icy resolve.

“Beckett,” she said, her voice devoid of all warmth, “the engagement is off. As of today, our families have no further connection.”

His head spun.

Canceled?

“Why?” He couldn’t comprehend it. His voice cracked. “Because of some stupid joke? This is a PR problem, we can handle it! You’re going to sever the alliance between our families over something this small?”

The senator looked at him as if he were a complete stranger.

“Where is she?” he asked again, his voice now pleading.

“She’s gone where she needs to be.”

This was impossible.

Daphne had been raised, just as he had, to put the family’s interests above all else.

She loved him. She needed him.

How could she just leave without a word, all over some harmless prank?

How could she not want him anymore?
