She Didn’t Fix Her Reputation. She Threw It Away. Chapter 13

Meanwhile, back in New York, Beckett was losing his mind.

Daphne was gone.

The night of the charity gala, he waited until the last guest had departed, but she never showed.

When he called, her number went straight to a cold, automated message: the subscriber you have dialed cannot be reached.

He tore over to her Upper East Side apartment and leaned on the doorbell, but there was no answer.

He let himself in with his spare key.

The apartment was empty.

Her closet had been cleared out. The expensive perfumes on her vanity were untouched, but the things she actually used were gone: her passport, her laptop, the stack of books she was always reading.

“What the hell is this?” he snarled, kicking at a rug. “She picks now to play the disappearing act?”

The TMZ story was still a media firestorm. The Wells family was being hounded by reporters.

Instead of staying in New York and helping with the damage control, she’d just… vanished?

A sharp, unfamiliar unease began to prickle at him.

He quickly suppressed it.

She was just throwing a tantrum.

Daphne had always been like this—outwardly compliant, but with a stubborn streak she liked to show off now and then. She’d be back in a few days, once she’d cooled off.

She always came back.

He used this thought to calm himself.

The next day, his father summoned him to the office.
