Back in Briarhaven, Nolan remained beside the woman who claimed she had been frightened.

He pressed the blessed pendant into Sloane’s hand and told her not to be afraid.

As he watched her rest, his face softened with the tenderness he had once reserved for me.

Yet the private message he had received would not leave his mind.

In the past, no matter how angry I became, I never went this long without contacting him.

“Are you worried about Maren?” Sloane asked.

“You should go see her.”

She lowered her eyes.

“I’ve been alone my whole life. I’m used to it.”

Sloane had often used her lonely childhood to win his sympathy.

Before, Nolan always responded with tenderness.

This time, the familiar performance irritated him.

Maren had lost both parents, he thought, but she never used her grief to demand special treatment.

He finally decided to go home.

“Get some rest,” he told Sloane.

Nolan seized his coat and left.

He drove recklessly through the city, barely noticing how many lights he ignored.

Only one thought mattered: he had to reach the condo and prove the message was a lie.

When he reached the building, warm light glowed behind the windows.

Relief rushed through him.

Who said Maren had left?

The lights were on. She had to be inside waiting for him.

He parked and hurried toward the entrance.

The building concierge called out before he passed the storage office.

“Mr. Vance, your boxes are in here.”

Nolan stopped.

When the concierge explained that Maren had left all his belongings in storage, his heart seemed to miss a beat.

He ran to the condo door without looking back.

Maren would never truly do this to him. He refused to believe it.

He knocked and imagined the relief on her face when she opened the door.

He was wrong.

A large, heavyset man answered while picking his teeth with a toothpick.

“Can I help you?”

Nolan demanded to see Maren.

The man’s expression turned contemptuous.

“So you’re the irresponsible ex-fiancé I heard about.”

“That woman stayed with you for years, and you kept refusing to set a wedding date. How did you live with yourself?”

He folded his arms.

“If my sister ever met a man like you, I’d make sure he never treated another woman that way.”

“I bought this condo. Don’t come back.”

The man began closing the door, then paused long enough to add that Maren had completed the sale properly and left no forwarding address.

The last fragile possibility Nolan had been clinging to disappeared.

Nolan stepped backward and pulled out his phone with shaking hands.

Every call went directly to a recorded message.

“How is that possible?” he whispered.

“She loved me.”

His chest burned as though someone had laid it over an open flame.

Then he remembered the private message and sank to the hallway floor.

It was true.

Maren had really left.

She had no parents, and her social circle in Briarhaven had always seemed small.

For years, Nolan had believed her whole world revolved around him.

If she was no longer beside him, where could she possibly have gone?
