Not Your Bet to Make Chapter 06

Unease crawled up his throat. He sent me a text.

“Grace, why’d you hang up on me?”

“Your mom said you ran away. Where’d you go? School’s

about to start. Stop messing around.”

“I’m giving you thirty minutes. Reply. Or I’m ignoring you.”

No response.

Asher finally understood. I was serious. The tension in his chest tightened. He called Tiffany.

“Tiffany, has Grace contacted you?”

Tiffany sounded groggy. Barely awake.

“No. Haven’t talked to her in forever.”

Asher paused.

“Try calling her. See if she picks up.”

Tiffany thought he was being weird but did it.

“I called. She hung up on me too.”

Same result.

All these years. Asher had never seen me this cold to anyone.

“Why are you asking me to call Grace? What happened?” Tiffany asked.

Asher’s voice was thick with worry.

“She ran away from home. No one can reach her.”

Tiffany made a surprised sound. Something flickered in her 3/5

eyes-faint, quick, then gone.

She put on the concerned act. Told him to relax. Said I was just being dramatic. Advised him to act like nothing happened and freeze me out. Said I’d come crawling back.

Asher couldn’t shake the dread. Left the house. Searched

everywhere.

Same result everywhere. Nothing.

Like I’d vanished off the earth. Every spot he thought I’d be,

every place he thought I’d show up-no trace.

This uncontrollable sense of loss was swallowing him whole.

He didn’t know what to do with his hands.
