Secret Mission Turned Out to Be Fathering My Bestie’s Baby Chapter 10

Once my phone was back on, my mother texted me every day.

She updated me on her treatment progress.

[I won’t be a burden to you.]

Jessica also kept trying to meet.

She sent photos of her son.

[Doesn’t he look just like Nathan?]

[Jamie recognizes his godmother. He smiles every time he sees your picture. Don’t you want to hold him?]

[Emma, I miss you too. Can we talk?]

Now that Nathan and I were divorced, this was another milestone for her.

Even if Nathan resented her now, the baby kept them connected forever.

I blocked her.

She texted from a new number.

[Sorry, Emma, but everyone’s selfish, aren’t they? I go after what I want.]

[I heard you’re with that junior of yours. Congrats. He’s richer and younger than Nathan. I guess I’m your matchmaker. Make sure to send me an invite when you get married.]

I felt sick.

Once the divorce was final, I left the city immediately.

I didn’t visit my mother.

Nathan was incredulous. “You hate me, I get it. But do you really hate your mom that much? She’s like this

now, begging for you. If you never see her again, won’t you regret it?”

I didn’t know.

What I did know was that I couldn’t forgive her.

Maybe I would regret it. But that was a future problem.

Three months later, I got the call that she was dying.

Liam came with me. I saw her one last time.

But the cancer had spread to her eyes. She was blind.

She held Jessica’s hand, mistaking her for me.

“Emma, I want to hear you call me ‘Mom’ one more time.”

“Mom.”

Jessica’s voice made her pupils dilate in disappointment. She let go.

‘Emma, you still won’t forgive me.”

In the end, my heart broke a little. I stepped forward.

“I’m here, Mom.”

She smiled and closed her eyes.

The funeral was modest. Nathan handled the arrangements. I didn’t shed a tear.

Jessica sneered. “Your mother must be heartbroken, raising a daughter like you.”

I ignored her.

“Emma, Nathan and I are going to be happy.”

I wished her well.

Nathan also offered his blessing. “Take care of yourself, Emma. Whoever you’re with, I hope you’re happy.”

“That’s none of your business,” Liam said.

He put his arm around me and led me away.

Everyone from my past-all the hurt-faded behind me like the scenery outside the car window.

I wasn’t looking back.
