I knocked on my mother’s door.

When she saw me, she froze, like she didn’t recognize me.

I’d cut my hair short. My skin was tanned.

I looked like a completely different person.

She raised her hand as if to hit me, but it stopped midair, then fell limply against my shoulder.

“Emma Carter, you still remember the way home? Why didn’t you just die out there?”

She was crying.

I felt nothing. Inside, I wanted to laugh.

“Sorry to disappoint. I’m still alive.”

She snapped out of it, grabbed her phone, and called Nathan.

“Emma’s back!”

Half an hour later, Nathan burst through the door, breathless.

He stared at me for a few seconds, then wrapped his arms around me.

“Emma… you’re okay… thank God…”

His voice cracked. His whole body trembled.

I pushed him away.

“Nathan, I’m here to finalize the divorce.”

He went rigid.

“No, Emma…”

I glanced at him, then at my mother.

“Isn’t this what you both wanted? You’ve always liked Jessica better. Don’t you want your child to have a real

father, not be some shameful secret?”

Nathan grabbed my arm, desperate to explain.

“Emma, I know now-it wasn’t you. Jessica staged the whole thing. She orchestrated that smear campaign.

The depression was fake. She manipulated us.”

“I’m sorry. I was angry. I shouldn’t have doubted you.”

I nodded.

“So what? Does that change the fact that you cheated and had a baby with her?”

“I’ll be at the Family Court tomorrow. If you don’t show, I’ll file without you.”

I turned to leave. My mother caught my arm.

“Emma, where are you going? This is your home. I’ll get your room ready. What do you want to eat? I’ll cook

for you.”

I looked at her coldly. She wiped her tears.

“I was wrong, Emma. I shouldn’t have favored Jessica. No matter how close she was, we’re not blood. I never

expected her to be so calculating. She played me too.”

I laughed.

“Didn’t you lie too?”

“I died in high school? She’s your only goddaughter?”

“Just like you said-Emma Carter is already dead.”

I pulled away and walked out.

Nathan followed.

“Emma, your mom was diagnosed with cervical cancer last week.”

I paused.

“She said it’s her punishment. She’s refusing treatment because she can’t find you. Can you talk her into

going?”

I gave a faint, cold smile.

“Let Jessica do it. She’s the one your mother always listened to. And you’re her favorite son-in-law.”

I got into Liam’s car. Once the door closed, the tears came.

Why did everyone have to act so regretful and pitiful now?

Had they already forgotten how much they’d hated me six months ago? How much they’d hurt me?

Liam handed me two tissues and drove off.

I laughed bitterly. “Want to bet? Do you think he’ll show up tomorrow?”

Liam said, “If he doesn’t, I’ll have someone drag him there.”
