I Bought the Wrong Beastman, and He Begged Me to Keep Him Chapter 06

I Bought the Wrong Beastman, and He Begged Me to Keep Him Chapter 06

“You bought a new one and you’re sending me back…”

His voice shook. He stumbled backward, and then he was shouting.

“Why?”

“How could you do this to me, Maren!”

“Adrian, we’re not right for each other. The swap is the best thing for both of us.”

But his eyes went red.

He almost laughed.

“You just wanted something new. You got bored of me, so you’re trading me in before the return window

closes…”

“Then what was I this whole time?”

“Am I just trash to you?”

The delivery woman looked between us.

“Ms. Caldwell, do you want us to restrain him and take him back?”

Adrian’s pupils blew wide. His ears flattened like airplane wings, the fur on his tail bristled, and his back

arched tight.

“Get out!”

“Don’t come near me!!!”

Adrian was shaking. I turned to the delivery woman.

“He’s not in a good place right now. Let me talk to the agency. Can we hold off on picking him up until he

calms down?”

She agreed.

I started toward Adrian, but a small voice came from the cardboard box.

“Miss Maren…”

I looked over. A pale young man with golden ears was curled up inside, hugging his own tail. He looked up at

me like a lost thing.

I helped him out of the box.

“What’s your name?”

“Theo Wren.”

“You don’t have anything to wear. I’ll grab a pair of Adrian’s spare pajamas for now. We’ll get you your own

stuff later.”

Adrian watched me go to the closet. His jaw clenched.

“You’re giving him MY clothes?”

I frowned.

“I paid for them.”

“Besides, you said you hated those fuzzy bear pajamas. Called them childish. If you don’t want them,

someone else will.”

“I think they’ll fit Theo just fine.”

Adrian snatched the pajamas out of my hands.

“Who said I don’t like them?”

“You’re not giving them to him!”

He hissed at Theo, fur bristling.

“Home-wreckers are the most disgusting things on earth!”

“Adrian!” My voice came out sharper than I meant it to. “I’m the one who agreed to the swap. You and I aren’t

the right match. That’s not Theo’s fault, so stop taking it out on him!”

Three years together.

I had never once raised my voice at him.

And the first time I did, it was for someone else.

Adrian’s face crumpled. His lips pressed together so hard they went white, and for a second, he looked like he was going to shatter.

But a second later, he buried all of it behind a vicious glare.

“I’m not the hybrid you want, but you still used me for three years!”

“And now you’re done with me? Just say it, you got bored.”

That one went straight through me.

He thought I’d been taking advantage of him all this time. And he wasn’t going to leave until I answered for it.

I opened my mouth to explain.

But a small tug on my sleeve stopped me. A soft, unhurried voice.

“I don’t need anything to wear, Miss Maren. Please don’t be angry at Adrian.”

My eyes drifted to the faint flush on Theo’s collarbone. Adrian saw it. He hurled the pajamas at Theo’s chest.

“You shameless little snake! Don’t even think about taking my place!”

Theo shrank behind me.

“Miss Maren, I don’t want to take anyone’s place. I came here to be with you too…”

I led him toward the bathroom to get him cleaned up.

Adrian planted himself in the doorway.

“He’s got two hands, doesn’t he? Why do YOU need to wash him?”

I gave up and showed Theo where everything was so he could wash up on his own.

I sat Adrian down and tried again. I told him there had been a mistake with his classification. That I’d never meant to take advantage of him. That we just weren’t compatible.

I hoped he’d understand.

But none of it got through.

Every gentle word made it worse. He’d flinch, convinced I was softening him up just to ship him off.

“You’re just trying to get rid of me so you can keep that little snake!”

“I’m telling you right now, forget it!”

I messaged the agency and explained everything. I asked what to do.

The reply took a long time.

[So he really is… Subject 8.]

[You don’t need to return him. I’ll let you keep him, free of charge. From this point on, he has nothing to do

with our agency. No support, no follow-up. Nothing.]

I didn’t understand what that was supposed to mean.

I pressed for answers, but the agency dodged every question.

Still, keeping him had to be better than sending him back.

So I agreed.

[Okay.]
