After His Affair, I Skipped the Drama and Chased Mediterranean Sun Chapter 08

The call ended, leaving the hallway outside the county morgue in dead silence.

After what felt like forever, the morgue doors opened.

Natalie stumbled out, clutching a small black ceramic urn.

Her eyes were red, and her voice broke as she spoke.

“Gavin, Evelyn is really gone.”

“She suffered so much from her depression all these years. She chose to die while we were away. Maybe she

was trying to set us free.”

As she spoke, Natalie leaned against Gavin’s shoulder.

“She knew we’d spent three years tearing each other apart, so she chose to step aside this way.”

“Gavin, Evelyn set us free. We can finally be together and live for her.”

“Set us free?”

Gavin jerked his head up and stared at Natalie with bloodshot eyes.

He couldn’t believe that a woman who cared so deeply about her sister could so casually call Evelyn’s

decision to die after learning the truth an attempt to set them free.

He pointed at the urn and roared in anguish.

“While she lay in cold bathwater and slit her wrist, we were fucking in a hotel room. And you still have the

nerve to say she was trying to set us free? You have the nerve to say we should go on living for her?”

“We drove her to her death! Natalie, are you even human?”

Natalie froze for a moment, then burst into hysterical laughter.

“You’re calling me inhuman? Gavin, what right do you have to judge me?”

“You couldn’t let go of Evelyn, and you were addicted to the thrill of sneaking around with me. That’s what

drove her insane. You’re the real murderer!”

The accusation hit a nerve.

Gavin sagged against the wall and closed his eyes in pain.

He had believed Evelyn would never leave him. He had even convinced himself that if he hid everything well

enough, he could keep both women for himself.

His selfishness and greed had killed the girl who had once looked at him as if he were her whole world.

Natalie thought she had finally forced him to face the truth. Her voice softened, and she tried to wrap her

arms around his waist.

“Gavin, this has already happened. Can’t we just accept it?”

“We can move overseas, forget everything here, and start over…”

Gavin pushed her away.

“I promised you a seven-day trip. I kept that promise.”

“What does that mean?”

“I can’t give you anything more. Natalie, I can’t keep betraying Evelyn.”

Natalie stared at him as though he had just said something absurd, her voice turning shrill.

“How many times have you already betrayed her, Gavin? Her children, her marriage, her entire life-which part of it didn’t you destroy? Don’t stand there pretending to be devoted now!”

Gavin ignored her hysterics.

He took Evelyn’s urn from her and walked away.
