After His Affair, I Skipped the Drama and Chased Mediterranean Sun Chapter 07

Gavin burst into the county morgue, nearly falling over himself in his rush.

His eyes bloodshot, he grabbed the officer in the hallway and demanded hoarsely, “I’m Evelyn’s family. I need to see her! Take me to her!”

The officer gave him a conflicted look and sighed.

“Mr. Hale, you can’t see her.”

“Evelyn Brooks left written final instructions asking that no friends or relatives be notified after her body was found and that her remains go directly to cremation.”

“The cremation was completed half an hour ago. This phone was the only personal item she left behind.”

The officer handed him a phone.

There was no body to see and no chance to say goodbye.

Even in death, she had denied him one last look at her.

“No. This can’t be happening!”

Gavin staggered backward and collapsed onto the floor.

Just then, the phone rang.

When he answered, Evelyn’s pale, gaunt face appeared on the screen.

Gavin was overcome with joy.

“Evelyn, is that really you? I knew you weren’t dead!”

“Evelyn, you win. From now on, you’re the only woman I’ll ever love. Please stop putting on this act to scare

me and come out…”

Evelyn watched him fall apart on-screen and smiled with grim satisfaction.

“So Evelyn really did kill herself.”

“Let me introduce myself properly, Gavin. I’m Evelyn-Evelyn from ten years in the future.”

Gavin stared at her. “What are you talking about?”

“You’re wondering why Evelyn suddenly stopped making scenes, aren’t you?”

“It’s because I made a few calls to her from the future and told her the truth she wouldn’t have discovered for

another ten years.”

Future Evelyn gave him a faint, unsettling smile and calmly recounted how she had exposed his affair with

Natalie.

“I sent her to the private lounge off your office, and I had her call her attorney, who had the marriage certificate checked and confirmed it was fake.”

“I also sent her to the hospital so she could see for herself how you nearly killed her to protect Natalie.”

“Oh, and one more thing.”

Evelyn paused.

“I told her that you’d been tampering with her antidepressants for three years to make sure she could never

carry a pregnancy to term.”

More color drained from Gavin’s face with every sentence.

So Evelyn had known everything.

She had taken it all in silence, sent him and Natalie away as though nothing had happened, then climbed into

the bathtub alone and slit her wrist.

“No, no. I already regretted it!”

“Before we came back, I had already decided not to send her to Switzerland. I was going to keep her here in

the States and get her proper treatment. I was going to take care of her…”

“Keep her here in the States?”

Evelyn looked as though she had just heard the most absurd joke imaginable.

“Three years from now, Natalie won’t be able to bear the guilt and will leave the country. You’ll lock me in a

room and use my hunger strike to force her to come back. I won’t be able to take it anymore, so I’ll jump

from the second floor and break my right leg.”

“Five years from now, Natalie’s guilt will drive her into a breakdown. You’ll take all your anger out on me and

stop my treatment until my body starts shutting down. I’ll end up on dialysis just to stay alive!”

“Seven years from now, Natalie-”

“Stop!”

Gavin could no longer bear to listen. He shouted in anguish, “I would never do that! I wouldn’t!”

The woman on the screen gave a humorless laugh and moved the phone farther away, bringing her whole body into view.

Future Evelyn was sitting in a wheelchair. Her right leg was gone below the knee, and her exposed skin was

riddled with needle marks from sedative injections.

Her eyes were cloudy and empty. She looked like a puppet with nothing left inside.

“Do you see now, Gavin? This is Evelyn ten years from now.”

“Tell me, was it better for her to die innocent while she still loved you, or to cling to life as the two people she loved most tortured her beyond recognition?”

Gavin stared at the maimed body on the screen and crumpled to the floor, trembling.
