The Mafia Don Fooled Me for 8 Years, I Became a Major’s Wife 8 Days Later Chapter 04

“She saw Zara’s interview and got so upset she wasn’t paying attention. A piece of rebar fell and went straight through her chest!”

“A donor heart became available, but we only have an hour to wire the funds. If we can’t clear the payment in time, they’ll offer it to the next patient.”

“There’s no time to take out a loan against the house. Lily, do you have three hundred thousand?”

My whole body went cold. I could feel my pulse hammering in my throat.

“Mom, listen to me. I’ve got five hundred thousand saved. I’m wiring it right now!”

I pulled up my banking app and started the wire.

The transaction failed.

My debit card. I’d given it to Damon a month ago.

A man who’d dropped a hundred and twenty million on a necklace. What was five hundred thousand to him?

I logged into the account. Zero. Every dollar was gone.

I called Damon. No answer. I called again. And again. Straight to voicemail.

My hands were shaking so badly I tapped the wrong thing on my screen: Zara’s latest post.

[accidentally crashed another billionaire party lol. these two are actual couple goals. i can’t]

The main photo was Damon and Aurora kissing under fireworks at the Cedar Isle estate.

Something twisted in my chest, but I couldn’t afford to feel it. I tapped the location tag on the post and headed out.

The second Zara spotted me, her face went hard. She shoved me back toward the door.

“Damon just got Aurora calmed down. What the hell are you doing here?”

My fever had barely broken. I was still weak. One shove and I went down hard, my wrist slamming against the floor. Pain shot up my arm.

Aurora looked down at me, one eyebrow raised, her lip curling in disgust.

“Is your little side piece putting on a show for us, Damon?”

His friends laughed. Every single one of them.

“Eight years with that? Wow, you were really slumming it.”

“She’s embarrassing.”

Damon’s jaw tightened. He turned on me.

“Get up. Stop making a scene.”

Ten minutes left.

My hands wouldn’t stop shaking, but I dragged myself to my feet.

“Damon, give me back my five hundred thousand!”

Aurora’s smile sharpened. “So that’s what this is about. Money.”

“Get on your knees and apologize, and I’ll write you a check. It’s only five hundred thousand. Pocket change.”

“God, Aurora, you’re too good to her.”

“Every time you say sorry, that’s another ten grand. Think of it as a wedding present for the happy couple.”

I could taste blood where I’d bitten the inside of my mouth. Their laughter pressed in from every direction.

“That money is mine! I just want what’s mine!”

“I gave you my debit card last month, Damon. Five hundred thousand dollars. Where is it?”

Damon frowned. “What card?”

Three minutes. My voice cracked.

“My sister is dying. Give me back the money. There’s no time!”

“I’ve never seen any card. And where would someone like you even get that kind of money?”

He wasn’t going to admit it. I turned to Aurora.

“If I get on my knees and apologize, will you actually give me the money?”

Damon stared at me like I’d lost my mind.

“You’d really get on your knees for money?”

I dropped to my knees. My sister’s life was worth more than my pride.

Aurora looked down at me the way you’d look at something stuck to your shoe.

“See, Damon? Five hundred thousand, and now you know exactly who she is.”

She pulled a checkbook from her designer clutch, wrote out a check, and tossed it at my feet.

I lunged for it, but Damon got there first.

He ripped it in half. Then into quarters. “Lily’s not like that, Aurora. Don’t insult her.”

The room blurred.

One minute left. I begged Aurora over and over.

“Fine. I’m a gold digger. I’ll say whatever you want. Just give me the money and I’ll disappear. You’ll never see me again.”

“Please. My sister is going to die!”

That was the last straw for Damon. He grabbed me by the arm, shoved me out, and slammed the door.

The hour was up. I felt it end like a door closing somewhere far away.

I crumpled to the ground. There was nothing left inside me. Not anger, not grief. Just nothing.

A laugh tore out of me, an awful, broken sound that didn’t belong to me, and the tears came anyway.

Eight years of lies. And now I had nothing: no money, no love, no sister to save.

Behind me, the fireworks at Cedar Isle kept going. They didn’t care.

Everyone else watched the sky. Only Damon watched Lily walk away, something gnawing beneath his irritation.

He reached into his pocket for his lighter. His fingers brushed something flat and smooth.

A debit card. Not his.
