The Mafia Don Fooled Me for 8 Years, I Became a Major’s Wife 8 Days Later Chapter 03

Damon’s hands dug into my shoulders. His eyes were bloodshot.

“Eight years, Lily. You’ve been mine for eight years. You don’t get to marry someone else. I’m not letting you.”

I slapped him. Hard.

“You married Aurora, Damon. You don’t get a say in my life anymore!”

“My marriage to Aurora is a business deal. That’s it!”

“You already waited five years. What’s six more months?”

“Don’t worry about Aurora. She knows how this world works. As long as you stay in your lane, she’s not going to come after you.”

Every part of me was shaking. I shoved him toward the door with everything I had.

“Get out!” I screamed. “I never want to see you again!”

Through the closed door, his voice softened. He was trying to sell me on the arrangement.

“I’ll get you a place. A real house. Bring your parents out here. A hundred grand a month, just for you.”

“No more five a.m. alarms. No more packed subways. I’ll take care of everything…”

He’d seen it. Every exhausting day, every sacrifice. He’d watched me grind myself down for five years and never once thought to stop it.

I couldn’t stop crying. My legs gave out, and I sank to the floor.

I didn’t know the man on the other side of that door. Maybe I never had.

A chill had settled deep in my bones, but my skin was burning. The room started to swim.

I’d had pneumonia years ago, the kind that left scars. Fevers hit me harder than most people.

I dragged the door open. My voice came out raw.

“Damon, I need the ER…”

I didn’t even finish the sentence. His phone buzzed. He checked it, and something shifted in his face. He was already walking toward the elevator.

“Aurora’s making a scene at the reception. I have to go. I’ll send Zara. Just hang on, okay?”

I watched him walk away. His outline blurred and doubled as my vision gave out.

Then the floor tilted, and everything went black.

I woke up in a hospital bed.

Zara was bent over me, replacing the cold compress on my forehead. She pressed the back of her hand against my skin.

“Thank God. Your fever’s coming down.”

“It’s just a breakup, Lily. How’d you let yourself get this sick?”

She actually looked worried.

“He’s a De Luca. She’s a Bianchi. You don’t want to be caught between those two families.”

“When did you find out?”

I watched her face and didn’t blink.

Zara’s mouth tightened. She couldn’t look at me.

“The year we moved to Havenport. He told me who he really was.”

“Five million dollars. Plus a job. All I had to do was keep his secret.”

“He said saving eighty-eight grand would be too quick. He’d need excuses. The phishing scam, the donation, the car accident… those were my ideas.”

Five million dollars. That’s what a decade of friendship was worth.

That kind of money bought a lot of loyalty. Just not to me.

I was done.

“Get out, Zara. As far as I’m concerned, we were never friends.”

Her head snapped up.

“You’re throwing away our friendship over this?”

“Fine. Don’t come crying to me later.”

She slammed the door on her way out.

A nurse came in a while later to check my IV.

She jabbed the needle into my arm, missing the vein on purpose. I bit down on the inside of my cheek to keep from crying out.

The nurse gave me a half-smirking, half-pitying look and dropped a gossip tabloid onto my lap.

“Lily Hart. You’re famous.”

I looked down. The headline screamed across the front page.

[WEDDING NIGHT SCANDAL: De Luca Heir’s Secret Mistress Exposed: Bianchi Bride Devastated]

Intimate photos of me were splashed across half the page.

The air left my lungs.

Only one person had those photos. Damon. He’d talked me into taking them on his birthday.

I was shaking with rage and already reaching for my phone when it rang. Damon.

“Aurora found out I came to see you last night. She went to the press.”

“Let her have this. Don’t fight back. It’ll only make things worse.”

He hung up before I could get a word out.

The nurse was still staring. I didn’t have the energy to explain. I closed my eyes.

I thought that was rock bottom. Then Zara went on camera and called me a gold digger.

I looked up at the TV mounted in the corner. She was on the local news, sitting in front of the cameras looking heartbroken, like she’d tried her best and I just wouldn’t listen.

“Lily and I have been friends since we were kids. I begged her to walk away from that relationship.”

“She wouldn’t listen. She was obsessed with the money, obsessed with him. Nothing I said got through.”

The video was already going viral.

A ringing filled my skull, so loud I couldn’t think.

I stared at Zara’s face on the screen. The girl I’d fed, clothed, and fought for was destroying me on national television.

I didn’t even have time to process it.

My phone rang again. Mom. She was already crying.

“Lily, it’s your sister. Something’s happened!”
