I Cancelled The Wedding While He Paid For Her Dream Dress Chapter 01

I Cancelled The Wedding While He Paid For Her Dream Dress Chapter 01

I was standing in front of the mirror in my wedding dress when the message came through. One of Callum Harcourt’s friends had tagged me in the group chat.

“Maren, invitations go out the day after tomorrow. You do realize your name isn’t on them, right?”

I stared at my reflection in the pristine white gown. For a second, I couldn’t process a single word.

Then a voice memo popped up from Callum’s childhood friend.

“Callum and I had a bet going. He said you wouldn’t notice until the invitations showed up. He changed the bride’s name to Brielle.”

“Damn, how did you not catch that? Go make him change it. Unless you don’t even care about your own wedding?”

I slowly unzipped the dress. The fitting room was stifling, but my skin had gone cold.

Brielle Langford. Callum’s first love. The one everyone in their circle still talked about like she was some kind of legend.

And Callum had looked both our families in the eye and sworn he’d marry me.

We were weeks away from the wedding, and they’d made a bet about how much I’d put up with.

“Callum, you’re cold for that. I bet she cries and begs you to change it back.”

“Nah, she won’t even be mad. Loser covers next month’s yacht party.”

My phone buzzed with a social media alert.

Brielle had just posted. A carousel of photos. Her, twirling in a limited-edition gown.

[Someone stayed up three nights straight and called in every favor to get me this dress. Dream come true.]

Callum had dropped a heart in the comments.

I hit like.

Then I deleted the wedding planning group chat and booked a one-way ticket to the Silverpine Highlands.

There wasn’t going to be a wedding. Highland air and an empty sky sounded like exactly what I needed.

…

The fluorescent lights in the boutique made everything look clinical. I gathered the skirt in both hands and passed it back to the attendant.

She followed me, measuring tape draped over her arm, still smiling. “Miss Whitlock, want us to bring the waist in another half inch? Mr. Harcourt was very specific. Everything had to be perfect.”

I glanced at the gown in her hands. “Don’t bother with alterations. The wedding’s off. Sell it to someone else.”

She froze, then came after me clutching the contract. “Miss Whitlock, if you cancel now, we can’t refund the fitting fee or the deposit.”

I pulled out a card from my bag and signed the cancellation form. “Charge it. And don’t call Callum or my parents.”

Outside, the sun hit so hard I had to stop and blink. My phone was still buzzing. The wedding planner was asking about the flower colors for the backdrop.

I leaned against the railing on the sidewalk and started canceling. Hotel. Planner. Glam team. Car service. One by one, until the cancellation fees hit $4,000.

The planner’s voice went careful. “Miss Whitlock, does Mr. Harcourt know you’re doing this? He called this morning and had us swap the bride’s name to Langford. Said it was just a joke.”

The payment confirmation flashed on my screen. “If he wants to keep playing games,” I said, “he can throw the wedding himself.”

Mom called. I could hear her country club friends chatting in the background, and even though she’d dropped her voice, she couldn’t keep the excitement out of it.

“Maren, Callum just sent over the most gorgeous gourmet hamper. Smoked salmon, lobster, the works. Everyone at the club is jealous.”

“He’s planning the biggest wedding this city has ever seen. Stop overthinking everything. Boys will be boys. They have their little games. You just have to turn a blind eye.”

“Mom.” I kept my voice steady. “What if my name isn’t the one on the invitation?”

She went quiet. When she spoke again, her voice had dropped to a hiss. “Don’t be ridiculous. Do you know how many girls would kill for a ring like yours? Don’t you dare make a scene and embarrass this family over nothing.”

I almost laughed. “Sure, Mom. Enjoy the salmon.”

I hung up and dialed Callum. The second he picked up, I heard Brielle laughing in the background.

Someone in the background called out, “Uh oh, Callum. The ball and chain is on the line. Better sweet-talk her before she pulls the plug for real.”

Callum answered, sounding deeply annoyed. “What now, Maren?”

I watched the cars go by. “Was it fun? Betting on whose name goes on our wedding invitations?”

Silence on his end. Then glasses clinked, and when he came back, he had that half-laughing tone. “Relax. The invitations aren’t even printed yet. We’ll change it back tomorrow. Brielle just got home. Everyone was trying to make her feel welcome.”

“So you used me to make her feel special,” I said. “My name, my wedding. That was the welcome gift you offered up?”

Callum sighed heavily. “You’re about to be Mrs. Harcourt. Would it kill you to be the bigger person? Brielle’s health hasn’t been great. She just wanted to try on a wedding dress once. Let her have her moment.”

Then Brielle’s voice, soft and careful, just loud enough for me to hear. “Callum, don’t fight with her over me. I’ll take the dress off. It’s hers.”

Callum’s voice dropped into something gentle. “This isn’t about you. She’s been like this lately. Everything seems to set her off.”

I looked down at my phone. Brielle had posted again. Two movie tickets on a dashboard, and next to them, Callum’s hand on the steering wheel.

I recognized the Cartier on his wrist. Six months of taking every emergency on-call shift at the clinic. That’s what it had cost me to buy him that watch.

[Thank you for being the one who’s always there. Today and every day.]

When Callum came back on the line, his patience was gone. “Maren, seriously. Can you stop making everything about you? You sound completely irrational right now.”

He hung up. I stood at the intersection and opened our shared album. Three years of photos. I deleted them all.

My phone buzzed with a Zelle notification. A $7,000 transfer from Callum. The note read: [Buy yourself something nice and calm down.]
