I Lost 90 Pounds, Only To Find He Tried To Give Me Away Chapter 15

Nolan’s phone password was my birthday.

I called his parents.

His father answered. The moment I told him, he said, “He’s hurt? I’m overseas right now, I can’t come back.”

“I’ll have my assistant handle the hospital bills.”

Then he hung up.

His mother was worse. I called three times. She never picked up.

The only person I could reach was his aunt.

By the time she arrived, Nolan was already out of surgery.

It looked worse than it actually was, thankfully. It wasn’t life-threatening.

His head was wrapped in gauze, and the anesthesia hadn’t worn off yet.

I couldn’t hold it back. I told her everything.

“Nolan got hurt because of me. He pushed me out of the way. I’m sorry.”

His aunt was polished in the way that money and good taste made possible-a tailored suit, understated

jewelry, the kind of skin that came from a lifetime of careful attention.

She waved it off. “He made that choice himself. That’s not on you.” She paused. “You must matter a great

deal to him.”

I bit my lip.

My head was a mess.

I didn’t understand why Nolan had done it.

I’d always believed he only liked my face. That it was shallow, surface-level.

But when it mattered, he didn’t hesitate.

His aunt settled into the chair beside the bed. “You’re the girl Nolan told me about, aren’t you? The one from

online.”

I nodded.

“He told me you broke up. What happened?”

I hesitated, then told her everything.

“Then the little idiot had it coming. You were absolutely right to dump him. No girl in the world would forgive

that.”

She sighed and looked at Nolan. “But he’s had it rough, too.”

She told me about his family. “My brother and his wife married for business. There was never any love

between them.”

“Once Nolan was born, they considered their job done. They both had their own lives outside the house, their

own affairs. Neither of them came home. And on the rare occasions they did, they brought someone else

with them.”

“Nolan was raised by nannies. And the only lesson his parents ever taught him, by example, not by words,

was that life’s short, so enjoy it. Don’t tie yourself down. Don’t take anything too seriously.”

“So that’s what he became. He’d date a girl because she was pretty, and the second he got bored, he’d drop

her.”

“You lasted longer than anyone. When he told me he’d been with someone for over a year, I was shocked. I thought he’d finally changed.” She paused. “I was wrong.”

“He wasn’t always like this.” Her voice softened. “I still remember the first time his father brought another woman home. Nolan threw a massive fit and demanded she leave. He was just a kid. He came to me crying

and said, ‘I hate him. I’m never going to be like him.”

She sighed. “His parents ruined him. And the sad thing is, I think he really does want what everyone wants-

someone to love who loves him back. He just doesn’t know how anymore. He’s been broken for too long.”

She turned to me. “You’re right not to take him back. Being with someone like him, you’d just end up

miserable, stuck in the same cycle his parents created.”

“I just hope, after what he did today, if nothing else, that you can find it in your heart to forgive him.”

“Whatever else he got wrong, the way he feels about you is real.”
