“You’ve got some nerve, Tessa.”

Sienna was waiting for me after class, blocking my path.

Her eyes were sharp with jealousy. “You just love going after other people’s boyfriends, don’t you?”

“Are you blind?” I asked.

She blinked. “What?”

“Nolan’s the one stalking me,” I snapped, out of patience. “I’ve been telling him to back off. How do you not

see that?”

Sienna’s teeth dug into her lip. “If you weren’t leading him on, why would he keep coming back to you?!”

“Did you even know?” she sneered. “He was the guy you were dating online. He looked you up, saw what you

looked like, and passed you off to Theo like you were nothing!”

“He thought you were disgusting! He tossed you aside!”

There was a gleam of satisfaction in her eyes as she said it.

She was waiting for me to fall apart.

I looked at her evenly. “So what? If he could throw me away that easily, what makes you think he won’t do the

same to you? Newsflash: he already did.”

Sienna went still.

“I honestly don’t know what you see in him. You want him? He’s yours. I don’t recycle trash.”

“Do you actually like him? Or can you just not stand being the one who got dumped?”

Sienna stood there with her mouth half-open.

Nothing came out.

I was done. “Get out of my way. I’m going back to my dorm.”

When I glanced back, she was still standing in the same spot.

A few days later, I heard Sienna went to find Nolan.

Only this time, she didn’t bring breakfast. She hit him across the face.

“We’re done,” she said.

“And for the record-you didn’t dump me. I dropped you. You’re not worth it.”

Nolan took it. He almost looked relieved.

Without Sienna in the way, he came after me even harder.

Like nothing I said could make him stop.

If I’d known dumping her would make him double down on stalking me, I would’ve told Sienna they were

soulmates.

I spent every day dodging him.

That afternoon, I was walking past a construction zone on the way back to my dorm. Half the road was

blocked off, the caution tape hanging loose and snapping in the wind.

I was looking down at my phone. Theo had just texted that he’d come pick me up tonight.

Then I heard it, a sharp screech of metal twisting above me.

Too close. I looked up. Three or four stories above me, steel pipes were sliding loose from the scaffolding,

tilting, falling, straight at me.

I tried to run. There was no time.

Everything slowed down. The pipes grew larger against the sky, closer and closer.

Something slammed into me from the side.

I hit the pavement hard. My knees cracked against broken brick and my palms scraped against the concrete.

The crash was deafening, steel against concrete. Dust flooded my lungs. I choked, coughed, and looked

back.

Nolan was on his knees in the spot where I’d been standing. One of the falling pipes had clipped him before crashing to the ground. He pitched forward into the rubble and didn’t move.

My whole body went cold.

“Nolan?!”

He didn’t move.

A dark pool of blood spread from the back of his head, pooling behind his ear and dripping onto the gray

concrete.

“Nolan!!”

I half-crawled, half-stumbled to him. His eyes were shut. Dust clung to his lashes.

The scaffolding above was still groaning. Workers came running, shouting. Someone pulled me back.

Someone was already on the phone.

Everything blurred into noise. I was on my knees, watching the dark pool behind his head spread wider, darkening the concrete.

My hands wouldn’t stop shaking. My heart was slamming against my ribs so hard I thought I’d be sick.

The ambulance arrived quickly.

When they lifted him onto the stretcher, one hand hung over the edge. His fingers were curled, his knuckles

scraped raw.

The doors closed.

My phone was still in my hand. The screen lit up.
