“You really want to keep this up?”

I cut her off and turned to Mr. Davis. “Pull up the second file. The housing records.”

Mr. Davis cleared his throat and swiped to the next screen.

“Based on building records and the public filings Mrs. Hayes flagged for us, Ms. Bennett doesn’t own unit

She’s a tenant. And her rent is paid a year in advance by a corporate account tied to a trading company.”
“There’s more. The company’s owner, a man named Winston Evans, also sends money to Ms. Bennett’s

personal account every month. The transfers are labeled child support.”

A murmur rippled through the crowd.

The women looked at each other. They understood immediately.

“So she’s a kept woman!” one of the older women said, not even trying to keep her voice down.

“No wonder she’s home all day floating around in that nightgown, eyeing everybody else’s husband!”

Chloe cracked.

She scrambled to her feet, jabbing a shaking finger at me. Her voice had gone shrill.

“You dug into my life? Who gave you the right? That’s my private information. I’ll sue you!”

“Go ahead.” I held her stare without flinching.

“Your lease is on file with building management and the HOA. That trading company has court records from a financial dispute. It’s all public record, with the account transfers right there in black and white. All I did was connect two things that were already out in the open.”

I took a step forward. Chloe flinched back.

“You hid behind the ‘poor single mother’ act. You let good people feel sorry for you. You turned every husband in this building into your personal errand boy, and you loved every second of it. You wrecked

marriages for sport.”

I paused. “And tonight, you showed up at my door with your little performance, trying to drag my husband’s

name through the dirt.”

I pointed to the door behind me: scratched, dented, barely on its hinges.

“Too bad for you. You knocked on the wrong door.”
