Mr. Davis held up the tablet and turned the volume all the way up.

The doorbell camera footage filled the screen.

The hallway was empty at first.

Then the elevator opened. Chloe stepped out, holding Leo’s hand.

Her posture was perfect. Steady pace, straight back. Not a hint of weakness.

She stopped in front of our door. Pulled out her phone, checked her reflection in the dark screen, and

smoothed her hair. Then she tugged her neckline lower.

Then she crouched and scanned the hallway until she found the angle just outside the hallway camera’s range but dead center in front of our door. She lowered herself to the floor. Gracefully. Like she was posing

for a photograph.

Her voice came through the tablet, crystal clear.

“Leo, go knock on the door. Cry louder, okay? Keep shouting for Mr. Hayes to save Mommy. If that woman. opens the door, just keep crying and don’t talk to her. Got it?”

The video ended.

Nobody breathed.

The claw hammer slipped from Harrison’s hand and hit the tile with a crack.

Mrs. Foster, still holding Leo, went completely still.

She let go of the boy. Stood up. Took two slow steps back, putting as much distance between herself and

Chloe as she could without saying a word.

I turned to Harrison. He looked like he’d been hit.

“So, Harrison. You took a hammer to my door for a woman who was checking her reflection in her phone

screen sixty seconds before she ‘collapsed”?”

His face cycled through about four colors in two seconds. I smiled. “I’m sure Martha is thrilled to see how

hard you fight for the neighbors.”

His mouth opened. Nothing came out. His jaw just hung there, working uselessly.

Chloe was still on the floor, fists clenched around the fabric of her skirt, knuckles white. She tried to smile. It

looked worse than if she’d cried.

“I… I started feeling faint as soon as I got out of the elevator. I didn’t want to scare Leo, so I tried to act

strong for him…”
