The Day My Husband Called Me His Sister Chapter 08

The Day My Husband Called Me His Sister Chapter 08

A few months later, Evelyn passed away.

Adrian didn’t help arrange the funeral. He didn’t go.

Word got around. The others Mr. Hawthorne had taken in over the years had plenty to say.

They called him ungrateful. After everything Mr. Hawthorne had done for him, he couldn’t even show up to

his daughter’s funeral.

They said he had no heart.

But Adrian didn’t care anymore.

He changed. Quit his job. Started going to therapy.

And he refused to sign the divorce papers.

“I’ll get better.”

Adrian sat across from me. He’d lost so much weight his cheekbones looked almost sharp enough to cut. But his eyes were clearer than I’d seen them in months.

“I’m learning how to face myself. How to stop carrying everything alone. How to actually love someone the

right way.”

He paused. Almost pleading.

“I’ll be better. And we can try for a baby again.”

“Please. Give me one more chance. Don’t leave me. Okay?”

“…We love each other. We both know that. So why does it have to end?”

Loving him was the best thing I’d ever felt. And the worst thing I’d ever survived.

He still didn’t understand.

After that, Adrian showed up three times a day.

Homemade soup. Home-cooked meals. He even started learning internet slang, scrolling through his phone like a man studying for the hardest exam of his life.

I’d just taken over a new project and was drowning in deadlines.

Nolan kept dropping hints. Maybe we should ban non-employees from the building. Or get a guard dog at the front door.

I rolled my eyes.

Nolan grinned. “Anyone who tries to poach my best employee is dealing with me personally. I bite.”

After work, I looked down from my office window. Adrian was waiting by the curb, looking up at the building

like a man waiting for a verdict.

I let out a long breath. “Fine… Let’s talk. We can start over.”

Adrian’s whole face lit up with hope. “Really?”

“But starting over means we divorce first. Then you pursue me again. Date me again. Propose again. Give

me a whole new wedding.”

“New memories over old ones. Like amnesia, right? That’s what a fresh start is.”

He hesitated. For a long time.

In the end, he nodded.

The divorce went through quickly. No fight.

We signed the final papers and walked out of the courthouse.

The sky had finally cleared. A cool autumn wind had swept the last of the summer humidity away.

I took a deep breath. The air was crisp and clean, and the weight that had been sitting on my chest for

months was gone.

Beside me, Adrian was still holding the papers. He looked at me the way someone watches a coin spinning

in the air.

“So… can we start over now?”

I looked at him.

“I’m sorry. I lied.” I held his gaze. “I only ever wanted the divorce.”

Adrian didn’t move.

“Adrian, you’re a good man.”

“But you already proved it yourself. You make a much better brother.”

I’ve always been the kind of person who’d rather die than look stupid.

Other kids fell down and got back up. I fell down and pretended I meant to lie there.

But this time, I fell harder than ever.

And I got back up.

The sun was out. I was walking straight into it.
