That night, I’d just turned off the light in the spare room and was trying to fall asleep.

The door opened.

Adrian stood in the doorway, backlit by the hall.

He didn’t turn on the light. He just walked in.

“Paige… are you mad at me?”

I sat up, hugging the blanket to my chest. “Why would I be mad? I’ve got a new job. Nolan’s well-connected. He’s already opening doors for me.”

In the dark, I heard his breathing change.

“Don’t.” His voice dropped. “Don’t say his name.”

“Don’t use him to get under my skin.”

The mattress dipped beside me.

Adrian’s arms came around me from behind.

He buried his face in the curve of my neck. His breath was burning hot.

“Paige, I miss you… I miss you so much. I’m losing my mind.”

I didn’t trust myself to speak.

But the sting crept up behind my eyes, and my throat locked shut.

I turned in his arms and hugged him back.

He went rigid, then crushed me against him, arms tightening like he was afraid I’d disappear.

“You’re right here. You’re right here, so why does it feel like I’m losing you…”

“Just a little longer. You won’t leave, will you? Promise me. Please.”

I pressed my ear to his chest. His heartbeat was wild, uneven.

“Adrian, are you catching feelings for me?”

“Yes.”

“Ooh, forbidden love. The internet eats that up.”

A sound rumbled in his chest. I couldn’t tell if it was a sigh or a laugh.

“There you go with the internet talk again.”

His hand drifted lower.

I caught his wrist.

“There’s a box of condoms in the nightstand. Use one.”

Adrian went still.

He let go of me slowly. One arm at a time, like it physically hurt to pull away.

“…I understand. Good night.”
