I stared a long while, overcome with bitterness, unable to speak.
She still chose to sit beside me.
But once a rift forms between people, it can never be smoothed over again.
Two days later, on my birthday, Nyx handed me a gift box.
“Rainer, winter’s coming. I picked out this scarf especially for you.”
I took it and opened it in front of everyone.
“Do you like it? I remembered you said you love green.”
Nyx smiled at me, all sweetness.
“Why stop here? Why not get the full set? Or do you think I already have enough of this shade?”
I held up the scarf in front of her, my tone mocking.
Serenah immediately snapped, “Rainer, you ungrateful brat! Nyx chose this gift precisely because she remembers your preference! Not a word of thanks from you, yet you turn around and lash out at her. All these years we spent funding your education—what a waste!”
I tugged at the corner of my mouth, self-mockery flooding my eyes.
When I once said I liked green, it was never the color itself I admired. It was only because Nyx often wore green dresses and blouses.
I could not tell if gifting me this green scarf was an innocent oversight, or something deliberate.
“Forget it. Rainer must think it’s far too cheap for him. How about giving it to me? I can barely get through every winter with the cold.”
Todd’s eyes turned red in an instant.
Serenah snatched the green scarf from my hands and tossed it into the trash. “Anything he’s touched is tainted. If there’s something you want, just tell me, and I’ll buy it for you.”
But Nyx walked quietly over to the bin, bent down, and picked the scarf up. “I think it suits you, Rainer.”
She folded it neatly and placed it back into the box, then turned toward Todd. “Todd, I have a gift for you too. Consider it a welcome-home present.”
She fetched a navy-blue suit from another room. “Try it on and see if it fits. I had it tailored to your measurements.”
I froze, my pupils narrowing.
It was the very suit Nyx had ordered two weeks prior, meant for our wedding anniversary. Back then, I’d told her I preferred black. She’d said navy blue made me look younger. I hadn’t put up any argument—I’d simply patted her head and agreed.
It dawned on me then. I had never been anything more than a fitting dummy for Todd.
“Wow, it looks amazing! This is my very first suit. But… Rainer won’t get angry at me again, will he?”
Todd took the suit, his fingers trembling, his eyes swimming with feigned hurt.
My parents softened at once.
“He wouldn’t dare!”
“Todd, now that you’re home, you’ll get everything Rainer has.”
“We’ll make it up to you. Not like that traitor—so selfish he’d stand by and let his own brother die!”
“We wasted so many years investing in him!”
