My Fire Captain Husband Locked Me In To Attend Her Birthday Chapter 03

The hospital room door swung open the next morning.

Dominic walked in holding a bouquet. Tessa trailed right behind him.

I looked at the flowers and my fingers curled.

Stargazer lilies. I’m violently allergic.

Tessa’s smile was already in place before she even crossed the threshold. “Willa! Dominic brought me first thing to check on you.”

Dominic walked to my bed and tossed the bouquet onto my chest. “You done being mad?”

The stems hit my sternum and petals scattered across my hospital gown. The scent punched into my sinuses, instant tightness in my throat.

I swept the flowers off me onto the floor. “Get those out.”

Dominic’s face darkened. “What’s your problem now?”

“I’m allergic to pollen.” I looked straight at him.

His brow didn’t even twitch. “Like I’m supposed to keep track of that.”

Tessa knelt immediately to gather up the bouquet, her voice dripping with soft concern. “Oh, Willa, I’m so sorry. I had no idea you were allergic to lilies. That’s completely my fault, I just wanted to get the prettiest ones.”

She straightened up and leaned in closer, dropping her voice. “You know, Dominic took me to the most adorable baby boutique today. He told me he’s always wanted kids more than anything.”

She paused. Smiled. “Too bad you just can’t seem to have any.”

I looked at her. The smile stayed on her lips but her eyes were pure challenge.

I grabbed the water glass off my nightstand and hurled it at her.

“Get out.”

“Ah!”

The glass shattered at her feet and water splashed everywhere. Tessa shrieked and scrambled behind Dominic.

“Dom, I was only trying to see how she was doing…”

“Shut up.” I kept my eyes locked on her. “This is a hospital room. Not your stage.”

Dominic seized my wrist, his grip iron-tight and his jaw set hard. “Willa. Act like an adult for once.”

I pulled my arm free, reached under my pillow, and threw the divorce papers at his chest. “Sign.”

The room went dead silent.

Dominic looked down at the document. His face went dangerously still. “Say that again.”

“Divorce.” My voice was quiet but absolute. “I don’t want the money. I don’t want the house. I just want a clean break from you.”

A flash of triumph flickered across Tessa’s face before she masked it with a frantic, soothing tone. “Dom, she just lost her baby… she’s not thinking clearly… don’t take it personally…”

My head snapped toward her. “How do you know I lost my baby?”

Tessa’s face went rigid.

Dominic turned to look at her too.

She scrambled. “I, I was just guessing.”

I let out a cold laugh and looked back at Dominic. “So. You believe her, or the medical records?”

He grabbed the agreement and tore it to pieces in front of me, letting the scraps fall across my face.

“Willa, threatening me with divorce won’t work. You want to fight? Fine, I’ll fight. But don’t think I’m going to put up with this forever.”

I brushed the torn paper off my face and my voice went icy.

“Fine.”

“See you in court.”
