Grant shook his head violently.

“No. That’s not it.”

“Skyler, I came to apologize.”

“I saw the DNA results. I… I didn’t know the baby was mine.”

The mention of the baby broke my composure.

I thought I’d been reasonable.

I didn’t cause a scene when I found out about him and Sloane. I just wanted to leave with whatever dignity I

had left.

But he’d doubted my loyalty and refused to let me go.

And then, for Sloane’s sake, he’d pushed me.

I thought about the baby I lost.

I thought about lying in that hospital bed alone for the procedure.

I thought about how he’d fought for Sloane’s unborn child in the comments while the father’s identity was a

The resentment surged like a dam breaking. I stepped forward and slapped him across the face.

“How do you even have the nerve to mention my child?”

Grant held his cheek, the pain in his eyes looking agonizingly real.

“Skyler, I regret it every second. Why didn’t I just trust you?”

“I know I messed up. Please, just come home with me.”

He actually thought I’d go back.

I wiped the tears from my face.

“I’m not going back. Not with you. Not ever.”

“Skyler, please don’t do this.”

His voice cracked. “I’m done with Sloane. Completely.”

“I was in a dark place. I was jealous that Vance had so many of your ‘firsts”.”

“I didn’t know how to handle the anger. I felt like it wasn’t fair, so I did something stupid.”

I let out a harsh, dry laugh.

“Did you not know I was a divorcee when you chased me?”

“Did you not know I wasn’t some untouched girl when we said our vows?”

“I told you everything. I bared my soul because I thought you were my last hope.”

I paused.

Even now, looking at him, I couldn’t help but remember the good parts.

“You used to say you wished you’d met me sooner so I wouldn’t have had to suffer.”

“Back then, your eyes were full of nothing but love.”

“But then, they were full of nothing but judgment.”

“If you stopped loving me, you could have just said it. Why did you have to cheat on me and call me

‘damaged goods’??”

Grant’s face turned gray.

His lips trembled, but all he could choke out was “I’m sorry” over and over.

“Skyler, I regret it. I let jealousy drive me to do something I can’t take back.”

“But I’ll change. I’ll never say those things again.”

“Please. Just give me one more chance.”

He stood there with his head bowed, his voice thick with a desperation I’d never seen from him.

When we first met, he was like a bright, burning fire.

He’d warmed my frozen heart.

But fire burns.

And love can turn to hate in a heartbeat.

He fell for me at first sight, and he turned on me just as fast.

It wasn’t just the baby that killed us.

It was the lack of trust.

A few vague words from Sloane were all it took for him to decide I was unfaithful.

That doubt wouldn’t disappear just because we got back together.

It was buried in both our hearts now.

I’d always wonder if he was cheating again; he’d always wonder if I was talking to my ex.

I looked at him. Really looked at him.

Grant was handsome. I’d known that from day one.

He had that sunny, effortless charm that came from a wealthy upbringing-a hint of a bad-boy smirk that

always hovered at the corners of his mouth.

Even now, begging for a second chance, he looked like he was starring in a movie.

But a broken mirror looks beautiful until you try to touch it and get cut.

The cracks never go away.

I watched the hope in his eyes and shook my head.

“I don’t accept your apology.”

“If that’s all, I’m leaving.”

Grant stared at me, his heart in his eyes.

He was trying to figure out if I was just lashing out or if I truly meant it.

After a long silence, he whispered, “Truly… not even a chance?”

I shook my head and walked away.
