After My Last Rewind, They Begged Me to Stay Chapter 08

By then, I had already left successfully.

I hovered above the room, looking down. The three Calloway brothers were kneeling beside my body.

When the police burst in, they were still frozen in that same position.

“Don’t move! Everyone, hands where I can see them!”

Officers stormed in with weapons drawn, pulling them away from me.

When the coroner moved to examine my body, Weston’s head snapped up, his eyes bloodshot.

“Don’t touch her!”

He shoved off the officer restraining him and threw himself over my body, shielding it.

“She’ll wake up. Don’t touch her. Just wait, she’ll wake up any second.”

My blood covered his face. His voice was raw.

“Eleanor- come back. Please come back!”

Nathaniel and Julian knelt where they were, unmoving. They didn’t resist as the cuffs went on.

They just kept staring down at me, their eyes full of something that looked, finally, like regret.

“Calm down. The deceased needs to be processed.”

“Get off!”

Weston fought the officers holding him like a man possessed, until three of them together finally pinned him

down.

The System’s voice surfaced in my mind, its tone carrying an unusual note-almost like it was testing me.

[Host. Seeing them like this-regretful, broken-does it feel good?]

I listened to the sound of their stifled sobs.

Then the System spoke again.

[Detected: all three targets’ Affection Points have reached maximum.]

[Host, you humans really are strange. They don’t cherish you when you’re alive. But you leave, and suddenly you’re priceless. Pity the mission is already over.]

I let out a short, tired laugh. “Pathetic.”

There wasn’t a single ripple left in my heart.

“I’m done watching.” I turned around.

“Let’s go.”

As I left, the three of them, being shoved into the back of the patrol cars, all flinched at nearly the same

moment-and turned, all at once, to look back in my direction.

Their eyes swept across the spot where I stood.

Empty. They saw nothing at all.

A flash of white light, and I was back in the present.

I sat on a clean white couch, a cup of still-steaming water on the table in front of me.

Sunlight poured in through the floor-to-ceiling windows, warm and easy-a world away from that suffocating

estate.

The mission had failed, but the System, as compensation for the ordeal of losing my memory, still awarded

me fifty million.

After the System signed off, I opened a flower shop. I got a cat.

Life passed by, unhurried and easy.

Then, three years later, one afternoon while I was arranging a fresh delivery of lisianthus into buckets, that

familiar System voice surfaced in my mind again.

[Host. Truly sorry to disturb you again.]

[Those three men have found a way to reach you. They want to see you.]
