They Fought Over Everything, but They Agreed on One Thing—Not Me Chapter 02

As we got out of the car, Vivian’s knees nearly gave out.

[This is all Grant’s fault. That bastard just had to try a new position last night!]

I froze. My hand shook as I shoved Vivian away when she leaned against me.

“Ah!”

She lost her balance and dropped hard to her knees.

“Vivian!” Grant instinctively reached out to catch her, but the moment he seemed to remember himself, his body went rigid.

Vivian gritted her teeth against the pain. Then she snatched up her purse and slammed it into Grant’s forehead without holding back.

There was a sharp crack, and blood ran down his face.

“Grant! This is all your fault! If you hadn’t kept provoking me, Natalie never would’ve gotten hurt!”

Grant pulled her to her feet, his voice turning cold.

“Don’t play innocent. You started it.”

I wanted to cover my ears, but Grant’s thoughts came through again.

[I wish I could kiss away her tears. Doesn’t she realize how hard it is to watch her act tough and hide the pain?]

Vivian fell once, and he could barely stand it.

My left hand had been scalded raw, yet all he saw was me causing trouble.

The difference between being loved and being unloved couldn’t have been clearer.

Feeling like a fool, I climbed out of the hospital bed. They both reached for me anxiously, but my voice turned cold.

“I want to go home and be alone.”

After getting my hand hastily bandaged, I took a cab to the condo Grant and I were supposed to move into after the wedding.

Whenever Grant and I had one of our breakup fights, I would come here alone and work on the interior design. For the past six months, Grant had insisted that the fumes from the renovations were still too strong and that the place needed to air out, so I hadn’t come back once.

The moment I opened the door, I stopped dead.

It felt like being slapped across the face.

Pink wallpaper. A dizzying number of stuffed animals. A white cat.

Then I suddenly remembered that Vivian had moved six months earlier, but she had always made excuses and refused to let me see how she had decorated her new place.

At the time, I had even joked with Grant, “Vivian’s being so secretive, anyone would think the two of you were living together.”

Grant had immediately gotten angry.

“Natalie, are you seriously accusing me of sleeping with Vivian?”

He stayed mad for days. Convinced that I was being oversensitive, I spent ages trying to make it up to him.

All along, she had been living in the home that was supposed to be mine.

A chill swept through me as I looked over the furniture.

The slippers, toothbrushes, and mugs all came in matching pairs.

No wonder I had once noticed that several of Grant’s clothes looked similar to Vivian’s. I had assumed it was another one of their petty attempts to get under each other’s skin.

I gave a bitter smile as an ache spread through my chest.

Then my gaze landed on several photos and trophies sitting on a wooden cabinet, and I couldn’t look away.

One photo showed Grant and Vivian laughing together as they held up a trophy. Others showed them making faces at each other during one of their supposed feuds.

In five years together, Grant had never once taken a photo with me.

He always forgot that I was allergic to blueberries and hated shrimp, yet he remembered everything Vivian liked and disliked.

Whenever I brought it up, he always brushed it aside.

“She’s my archrival. How am I supposed to get under her skin if I don’t know what she likes and hates?”

I could have let all of that go.

But once, during an important case, I left a crucial document on my laptop and asked Grant to send it to me.

After opening the computer, he asked, “What’s the password?”

“My birthday.”

Ten minutes passed, but the file never arrived.

When he finally spoke again, his voice sounded painfully awkward.

“Your birthday is… when?”

By then, it was already too late. I lost the case outright.

My firm disciplined me, and my client’s family went to the press, accusing me of being an unethical attorney.

Even then, I found an excuse for him.

Tears spilled down my face. I hurriedly wiped them away, but then I heard the front door open.

Panicking, I scrambled beneath the bed in the primary bedroom.

“Grant, you’re insane!”

Vivian angrily bit down on his lip.

Grant didn’t get angry. Instead, he buried his face in her hair like he was the one who had been wronged.

“Stop it, Vivian. My head is killing me.”

Watching him lower his head and soothe her left me cold all over.

“Grant, I’m telling you one last time. This is the last time we lie to Natalie!”

“If it happens again, I’m leaving you!”

Something in her words set him off. Grant’s face darkened, and he bit down hard on her lip.

“You started this, Vivian. You think you can just walk away now? Dream on.”

He seized her and threw her onto the bed.

“Grant! We can’t do this!”

“Have you forgotten what happened when that scumbag backed me into a corner? Natalie took my case even though it could have gotten her blacklisted by the entire industry!”

Grant’s eyes were bloodshot, but he kept kissing her as if he couldn’t stop.

“I haven’t forgotten. I also haven’t forgotten that Natalie stayed beside me and helped me build my company when I was drowning in debt!”

“But what does that matter? Vivian, you’re the only one I love now!”

“Even if you killed me, I’d still love you and no one else!”

What a beautiful declaration of love.

Too bad it wasn’t meant for me.
