My Son Told Me I Was Too Ugly And Stupid Compared To Her Chapter 03

I sat alone until dawn. Then I got up off the floor. And picked up a kitchen knife.

Calmly, I raised my wrist and stared at the veins beneath my skin.

But just as I was about to do it, the door burst open. Charles stormed in, his face dark.

He ignored the knife in my hand and grabbed my arm, his eyes full of disappointment. “Why? Why would you do that?”

My mind was foggy from a sleepless night. My voice came out raspy. “Do what?”

Jacob, red-eyed, rushed at me and collided with me. “Jessica’s house caught on fire! If she hadn’t been with us last night, she would’ve died!”

I fell hard to the floor. But then Jacob screamed. I looked up in panic and saw blood all over his hands.

The weapon was the knife I’d been holding.

My heart pounded. I crawled toward him, desperate. “Jacob, let me see. I didn’t mean it.”

But Charles shoved me away with a slap. “Emily, you hurt our son! You’re out of your mind. Get out!”

Jacob was crying, pushing at me. “Go away! Go away! I don’t want you! You’re so mean!”

I stood frozen across from them, watching their wary, disgusted expressions. Then I started laughing. “You want me to leave? Where am I supposed to go?”

My laughter grew louder. Charles saw something shift in my eyes and stared, alarmed.

When I grabbed the knife and plunged it toward my own throat, he caught the blade just in time.

For once, real fear showed in his eyes. “You’re crazy. You’ve lost your mind.”

But I shoved him away. “You wanted a divorce! Why save me?”

Afraid of me clinging to him. Afraid of me dying. Charles, what are you so afraid of? Tears streamed down my face again.

I wanted to ask him if he still loved me at all.

But then Jessica burst into the room. She stood in front of Charles and Jacob, her eyes red, shielding them as if I were some kind of monster. As if they were the real family.

“Emily, I’m sorry. This is all my fault. If you want to hit someone or yell at someone, do it to me. Just don’t hurt them.”

Before I could respond, Charles and Jacob immediately stepped in front of Jessica. They looked at me with suspicion.

“This isn’t Jessica’s fault,” Charles said. “Emily, what do you want? Just name it. I’ll give it to you. If you don’t want a divorce, fine. But when the baby is born, I’m taking it home to raise.”

He had torn down every last pretense. He didn’t care about my feelings anymore.

And he knew exactly how much I hated children born from affairs.

My own father had thrown my mother and me out for another woman and his illegitimate child. He’d beaten us in the street while everyone watched.

We’d had no money, no home. We’d lived under a bridge, starving.

My mother had taken a job as a waitress and endured harassment just to give me a roof over my head.

When Charles first learned about my past, he’d been heartbroken.

He’d held me close, over and over, making promises. “Emily, I will never let you suffer again. I swear. You’re the only one for me. No one will ever hurt you.”

He was gone now. Charles, Jacob, and Jessica. He’d broken his promise. The one hurting me most was him.

I completely broke down. I called him like a maniac.

When he blocked me, I texted him. I raged, I cursed, I begged, I pleaded.

Over the years, I had become so dependent on him that I couldn’t handle the truth now that it was staring me in the face.

“Charles, you bastard. I’ll haunt you even in death. I hope you and that woman die together. I hope you get hit by a bus. I hope you rot.”

“Charles, I’m sorry. Please come back, you and Jacob. I’ll pretend I don’t know anything.”
