I froze.

Mrs. Vance was apologizing?

What kind of plot twist was this?

She continued, “I used to think you were the kind of woman… who was only after our family’s money. But

over these past few months, Grant’s aide has been reporting your situation to me.”

She looked at me.

“You haven’t asked for a single extra dime. You even tried to lower the settlement allowance. When Gavin

came to you, you didn’t yield. When Vivian approached you, you didn’t break either.”

“I admit, I misjudged you.”

I sat there in silence.

Mrs. Vance’s expression was complicated.

There was confusion at encountering someone who defied her expectations, worry over her son’s condition

as a mother, and an awkward discomfort from dropping her pride.

“However, Josie, I need to tell you a fact.”

“What fact?”

“Grant’s medical condition.”

Her voice dropped low.

“How much do you know?”

I said nothing.

Watching my reaction, Mrs. Vance seemed to read the answer from my silence.

“You know.”

“I know a bit.”

Mrs. Vance nodded, not pressing me on where I got the information.

“Then you should understand what these two children mean to Grant.”

“I understand.”

“So I came here today to ask you-”

She stared straight into my eyes.

“What if Grant doesn’t just want the children?”

My breath hitched for a second.

“What do you mean?”

“Calling off the engagement wasn’t just because of the Sterling family, though that was part of it.”

Mrs. Vance’s tone sounded like she was talking to herself, yet explaining it to me at the same time.

“He told me something.”

“What did he say?”

Mrs. Vance looked at me, pausing for two seconds.

“He said, ‘When the contract ends, I don’t want her to leave.”

My brain went completely numb.

Blank for several seconds.

What?

He doesn’t want me to leave?

What did that mean?

My mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Mrs. Vance stood up.

“I’m not here to play matchmaker for my son. He can fight his own battles.”

She pulled at her cuffs, reverting back to her cold, sharp persona.

“I just thought you deserved to know.”

“As for what you think, that’s your own decision.”

Walking to the door, she cast a glance back at me.

“However, Josie-if you choose to stay.”

Her tone was quiet, but crystal clear.

“I won’t make things difficult for you anymore.”

The door opened and clicked shut.

Mrs. Vance was gone.

I sat alone on the couch.

The living room was dead silent, save for the TV screen still frozen on pause.

The two little things inside my stomach moved again.

Not a gentle nudge this time.

They were practically doing backflips in there.

I looked down at my rounded belly, my mind a complete jumble of thoughts.

When the contract ends, I don’t want her to leave.
