He Comforted Their Child While I Recovered Alone Chapter 09

Grayson didn’t fly home right away.

He stayed near the hospital for a month.

At first, he waited outside the rehab center every single day.

When it rained, he’d leave an umbrella for me. When it got cold, he’d have the front desk hold a jacket for me.

I never once took either.

Eventually, I had my lawyer tell him not to come anymore.

The next day, he wasn’t outside the rehab center anymore.

Before he left, he had my lawyer pass along one file.

Inside was the complete evidence from the car crash, along with a statement he’d written out himself.

He admitted to helping cover up where Piper had gone, and to helping her dodge the responsibility she owed

for years.

Handing that statement over would cost him his reputation, his career, everything.

His lawyer asked if he was doing this to earn my forgiveness.

Grayson shook his head.

“She doesn’t need to forgive me.”

“I just owe her the truth. That’s all this is.”

I decided to reopen the case on that crash.

The moment Piper was brought in for questioning, my parents finally panicked.

They called me over and over, begging me to drop it, for the family’s sake.

Mom cried into the phone. “Piper has a son now. She can’t lose everything all over again.”

I only asked her, “And what about me?”

Silence on the other end of the line, for a long time.

Five years ago, they’d waved away my baby and my ruined leg with one line: “You still have Grayson.”

Five years later, Grayson betrayed me, and they still figured I could just pick myself back up.

It wasn’t that they didn’t know I was in pain.

It’s that they always believed Piper couldn’t handle pain the way I could.

I didn’t drop the case. I stopped answering their calls, too.

After Grayson went home, he moved out of the townhouse.

He still covered Beckett’s expenses, but he refused to keep pretending with Piper. He wouldn’t stay tangled in the lie they’d built together.

None of this was Beckett’s fault.

But that didn’t mean Grayson got to spend the rest of my life stitching together some happy ending for the three of them.

He sold the townhouse and handed my share over to my lawyer.

With what was left, he set up a car-accident recovery fund under the name of the baby who never got the chance to be born.

He never told me about it.

It only came up in passing, in the paperwork my lawyer sent over when the case finally closed.

I wasn’t moved.

Making up for something after the fact doesn’t erase the damage.

But at least this time, he wasn’t doing the right thing just to get me back.
